Gov. Ron DeSantis speaks Wednesday at the Kravis Center’s Cohen Pavilion
"Gov. Ron DeSantis explained how he decided to slash local property taxes while tackling other hot-button topics in hourlong remarks Wednesday at the Forum Club of the Palm Beaches in West Palm Beach. Why it matters: The governor made his remarks a day before a House committee released eight tax-cutting proposals, all taking aim at local property taxes, which generate $55 billion a year.
Zoom in: The governor, who is term-limited next year, honed in on relief for homesteaded properties, saying cities and counties can still collect full taxes on rental units, seasonal homes and commercial properties.
What he’s saying: “So people say, ‘Well, where are you going to get the money?’ Well, how come nobody asks, ‘Why can't government spend less money?’”
Yes, but: While he said about 70% of property taxes come from non-homesteaded properties, in Palm Beach County, non-homesteaded properties account for 59% of the tax base."

Well if DeSantis doesn't do something soon about lowering property taxes for Floridians especially senior citizens a lot of people are going to be moving out of Florida and it's going to hurt Florida a great deal we're already thinking about moving out of the state because we can't afford $4,000 a year property taxes it's too high and they just keep increasing every single year it's outrageous and we're homesteaded it's just crazy they need to do something otherwise we're moving out of florida!
I guess you could feel lucky that your house is worth a lot of money...at least $450,000 or so? Let's see what DeSantis can do...Homesteaded properties already get a break but if he can reduce taxes altogether, that would be great.
No more like 300k if you can sell it now for that! Which I doubt!
And most people who have condos especially condos by the beach or three stories are high their condo values have dropped to be about half of the value they were a few years ago before covid most people's condos are worth half of what they probably paid for them just before covid!
In my community, which is the lower end price wise of condos, they are maintainign their value.
A lot of properties were over-priced then.
Property taxes have a cap. I forget what it is, something like 2%. It's the non-ad valorem that is increasing exponentially. I don't see how you can control these costs. Why would you want the Governor to lower taxes on non-homesteaded properties? How is the state supposed to run with no taxes. This is an expensive state. You can always move somewhere with fewer amenities if you want lower taxes.
Did I say that I wanted Desantis to "lower taxes on non-homsteaded peoperties?" He's not. He wants to eliminate property taxes on homsteaded properties.
This is called crying with a loaf of bread under your arm. I'm sure that people are going to feel sorry for you in your 400k house, when they can't afford a two-bedroom apartment. Maybe you should try to sell the house to someone who can afford it. Maybe you should have done that to begin with. Your taxes had to be high when you bought the place, so, basically, you just bought a house you can't afford to live in. You have a lot of company. You buy a million-dollar house, and take a 90% loan out on the house, and then complain about the taxes. Welcome to the real World!
No Lynn, you didn't say that!
They spoke about this on the news last night from Orlando area saying about how the property taxes in Homestead exemption is unfair and that you can buy it property and have to pay $6,000 in property taxes while the person next to you has the same house and they're only paying $2,000 it really is unfair the homestead exemption approach is really unfair anyway because somebody who has to buy a new property you can't buy anything now it cost two three four five hundred thousand and then you can never even sell it for that amount after you buy it you lose the money so many people aren't upside down mortgages right now people who have spent $400,000 on a house they're finding that the house really only has a value of $250k or $300,000 now so they've lost a lot of the appreciation in their house and then they're paying outrageous property taxes on this property property tax homestead exemption laws are really really unfair and they're unfair for new home buyers and that really needs to be addressed because it's going to make a lot of people start leaving Florida soon because we're losing their houses or losing their properties because they just can't afford to pay 5678,000 in property taxes every year and that's what these homestead exemption rules are doing they're forcing us to pay such high taxes it's outrageous it's really unfair!
Property tax homestead exemption is really unfair anyway I bought my house 4 years ago and my property taxes are $3,600 and my next door neighbor who bought her house like 18 years ago only pays $800 in property taxes it really doesn't seem fair and we could both sell our houses for the same amount of money right now my house isn't any better although it's a little bit newer than hers but it's just really not fair the homestead exemption approach that Florida uses really is unfair for new property owners!
Boy, you people are stupid! If you don't want to pay property taxes, live in a rental unit. Then the landlord will pay the taxes and get rich too. If you couldn't afford to pay the taxes, you shouldn't have bought the house.
Maybe you don't want to pay the Electric Bill either!
