How ‘citizen scientists’ can help track trash with the latest Lake Worth Lagoon Drift Card Study.

Calling all visitors to Palm Beach County’s waterways: Be on the lookout for hundreds of floating purple cards.

If you find one, you’ve stumbled onto a research mission involving citizen scientists and a study of how debris moves through inland waterways and accumulates on the coastline.

The 15th Lake Worth Lagoon Drift Card Study kicked off May 1 when volunteers deployed 320 bright purple cards made of thin biodegradable wood at eight different sites in Palm Beach County — from Burt Reynolds Park in Jupiter to Silver Palms Park in Boca Raton.

Palm Beach police step up enforcement on boats in Lake Worth Lagoon

If you’ve ever walked or boated along the Lake Worth Lagoon, you’ve probably noticed boats that look like they’ve been sitting there for a while.

On Tuesday, Palm Beach police updated town council members on what they’re doing about it — as they step up enforcement aimed at boats tied to illegal moorings or left anchored long-term in town waters.



Police say they are now cracking down on illegal moorings and enforcing a law passed in November that limits how long boats can stay anchored, no more than 30 days within a six-month period.

Salvage crews remove abandoned yacht from Snook Islands Natural Area

SALVAGE CREWS FINALLY removed the hulking remains of a 33-foot yacht that had been precariously abandoned since June on rocks in an environmentally-sensitive Lake Worth Beach waterway.

“We removed the boat this morning from Snook Islands,’’ said Greg Reynolds, executive director of Lagoon Keepers, a Palm Beach County non-profit organization of volunteer boaters who remove and recycle derelict boats in county waterways.

The removal on Sept. 13 came as a relief to residents who’d been worried the derelict yacht might leak fuel and oil into the Snook Islands Natural Area and Lake Worth Lagoon.

“We patched it (Sept. 12) and dragged it off at high tide this morning and patched it again,’’ Reynolds said.

Up to 300 gallons of sewage dumped into Lake Worth Lagoon

A damaged pump controller at a sewage station on West Blue Heron Boulevard in Riviera Beach caused approximately 200-300 gallons of sewage to spill into the Lake Worth Lagoon Friday evening, a report from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection said.

ERM Announces 2nd Annual Lake Worth Lagoon Photo Contest

Palm Beach County’s Department of Environmental Resources Management (ERM) invites the public to participate in the second annual Lake Worth Lagoon photo contest. Photographers of all skill levels and ages are encouraged to submit their best photos of the county’s largest estuary for a chance to have them featured in the 2017 Lake Worth Lagoon calendar.

To help showcase the lagoon’s environmental, recreational and economic value, ERM is seeking photographs of a variety of subjects including landscapes, underwater, wildlife and people. Images may be entered into a general or youth category.

Submissions must be received by July 15, and all images must have been taken within the boundaries of Lake Worth Lagoon, which extends approximately 20 miles from North Palm Beach to Ocean Ridge. Each photographer may submit up to five digital images in accordance with the contest rules and will need to provide a completed entry form which includes a release.

The 2017 Lake Worth Lagoon calendar will be distributed free of charge while supplies last on Saturday, Nov. 12, at the third annual LagoonFest. This family-friendly celebration of the lagoon will be held next to the West Palm Beach GreenMarket on South Flagler Drive along the downtown waterfront.

I could not identify this water bird so I asked expert birder, Gael Silverblatt. She informed me that it is an immature Yellow-Crowned Night Heron. These birds live in or near wetlands—on the coast along islands, mangroves, and barrier beaches. So what better place to visit than our own Lake Worth Lagoon and beautiful golf course?

Steve, at Adventure Times, will get us all set up in our kayaks so we can launch by 8:30 and we will kayak down the Earman River canal out into the intracoastal (depending on weather), picking up trash and debris along the way. For all you novices, this is a great chance to try kayaking for the first time. In lieu of birthday gifts, your $40. donation will get you a membership in Lagoon Keepers www.lagoonkeepers.org and a half day use of a kayak, paddle & vest. If you have your own kayak, the donation will be $25. with 100% of the proceeds going to Lagoon Keepers for their great work. This organization has picked up an average of about 4-thousand pounds of debris a week over the last 10 years coming out of our Intracoastal Waterway. 6,000 Tons of Concrete to be dumped at the Lake Worth Lagoon

It seems we have been getting a lot of stuff from Lantana over the past: demolition debris dumped on our landfill from Lantana company, Sun Recycling, Lantana's old city manager and now 6,000 tons of concrete will be dumped on the Lake Worth Lagoon.

Not only are we getting massive traffic coming through Lake Worth because of the Lantana Bridge being rebuilt, "most of the 6,000 tons of concrete are being cut up and will travel north to shore up the mud bottom at the Snook Islands habitat-restoration project in Lake Worth," says the PB Post.
