Earth Day and John Prince Park

Today is Earth Day, a day designated for fostering appreciation of the earth's environment and awareness of the issues that threaten it.
We have a huge issue right here in our own back yard. The Palm Beach County Commission, along with Lake Worth commissioners Scott Maxwell, Pam Triolo and Andy Amoroso, all who want to give 100 acres of public land in one of Palm Beach County's most beautiful parks to a billion dollar baseball team for private enterprise.
If you have not yet done so, please go to John Prince Park Preservation Facebook page and become a supporter to save and preserve our park.

Lake Worth Earth Day Festival 2016
Earth Day Fest returns to Lake Worth’s downtown Cultural Plaza on Saturday, April 16th featuring family fun, rescue animal interactions, eco-exhibits, and an exciting line up of live acoustic and jam bands.
The Festival runs from noon – 9 PM beginning with children’s activities, crafts, Earth Ball Games, prizes and a kids’ music circle and an a “all-in” kids’ drum circle. At 4:30PM, the Mayor will read the City’s Earth Day Proclamation, followed by the annual tree giveaway. Late afternoon and evening will feature more adult music.
Plan on a day of celebration, music, green exhibits, healthy food and earth-friendly fun.
The Cultural Plaza is located at Lake Avenue and M Street across from the Lake Worth Library. Admission is free.
Exhibits will range from county wide water conservation projects to solar energy, home gardening, rain barrels and Florida wildlife. Contact Brian Kirsch at briankirsch7@gmail.com for more information about vendor space, provided free to nonprofits.
The tree-giveaway (Lake Worth residents only) will be by drawing. Be sure to register at the LW Tree Board Tent.

Earth Day
Saturday was a great day to stroll the Cultural Plaza. Bought 3 magnet bracelets, bought a book at the Library book sale for 25 cents--The Dark Side of Camelot, by Seymour Hersh...can't wait to take the time to read it--wandered over to the Joey Bergsma Retinoblastoma Awareness Foundation booth. Pam Bergsma does such outstanding work on behalf of her late grandson, Joey. Lots of people taking advantage of the bargains from the vendors and the Tree Board was there with its give-aways. Utility Director Clay Lindstrom and his wife were manning the City of Lake Worth booth with a rep from OUC...got another little keyring OUC flashlight. The Lindstroms are looking to buy a house in Lake Worth. All you Realtors now can pounce on him.

An Earth Day Comment

Last night, Commissioner Amaroso responded to my criticism of the Cultural Plaza on my visit to the Earth Day event and how the plaza is neglected. He said that he was disappointed that I did not give kudos on my blog to all the volunteers and the Kiwanis, etc. Earth Day, as well as all our events, are always successful because of the many people involved. This Earth Day was no exception. However, it still does not negate the fact that our plaza has become blighted. I am just as disappointed that this serious problem was not discussed by the commission.
So here's a positive: OUC, our new energy provider whose contract starts on January 1, 2014, and a company that came in with the best price and much lower than FPL, was there with a booth to introduce themselves to the residents of Lake Worth. They had literature and LED key chains for those who dropped by and said "hi."
Although no law has been broken, we offhandedly learned last night that FPL has been meeting, out of the Sunshine, with each commissioner individually.

Earth Day at the Lake Worth Cultural Plaza

It was another awakening yesterday..the "earthy" problem of living in Lake Worth. Earth Day was held at the Cultural Plaza, a place that used to have a lot of charm and pride for us all. Not any more.
Our Cultural Plaza is not being maintained. Staff cuts down a big shade tree without permission. The grass is going to weed. The fountain is still inoperable. The berries from the ficus tree have been dropping and allowed to stay on the pavers with people trampling them into the brick. The place should have been mowed before this event, swept up, pressure cleaned and made to look spiffy so that people would have a desire to come back. I couldn't help but think of our beach and what will/could happen there. Through total neglect, we had to build a new casino. Instead, it is the same old complaint we have had for years--no maintenance on our assets--totally ignored by the City. The mayor, with her heart in the right place, arranges for a citizens volunteer clean-up and the neighborhood associations do it all of the time. The downtown has become one big flea market, as one resident pointed out. Crime is everywhere and although I did not witness any panhandlers yesterday, they are often seen in our downtown.
I want to purchase a paver at the Cultural Plaza as does Commissioner Amoroso for his Mother but have been hesitant. If this plaza continues down the blighted path, it would be an insult to our loved ones' memories just like our Cemetery.
