Kim and I were actually playing phone tag this week, but we’ll touch base. In terms of a safety action plan, when discussing projects for the Safe Streets & Roads for All grant earlier this year (SS4A), Jerry was able to confirm with USDOT that our recently completed Phase 1 – Part 1 of the mobility plan (currently working on Phase 1 – Part 2) also serves this same purpose so we were able to submit for an actual project.

As a reminder, the following is a quick project summary of our SS4A grant submittal for safety improvements to North A, North B, North C, North D, South A, South B, South C, and South D Streets:

 This SS4A Implementation project will deploy safety countermeasures along these corridors using a phased approach. Proposed improvements include:

o Raised pedestrian crosswalks and curb extensions
o Speed humps and mini roundabouts
o ADA-accessible sidewalks and ramps
o High-visibility crosswalk markings and signalized intersections
o Protected bike lanes and low-stress bicycle network segments
o Enhanced bus stop safety and first/last-mile connections
 Each element is backed by crash reduction factor research and best practice case studies cited in the Mobility Plan’s Appendix B. Collectively, they shift our city from reactive enforcement toward proactive, equitable design.

Road Re-surfacing on Lake and Lucerne to take about one year

$5.4 million resurfacing project set to roll across downtown's main avenues after Lake Worth Beach Street Painting Festival

LAKE AND LUCERNE avenues will be covered with colorful murals this Saturday and Sunday when more than 600 artists scrawl chalk masterpieces on asphalt at the annual Lake Worth Beach Street Painting Festival.

Two days later, the artists will be replaced by construction workers launching a $5.4 million road resurfacing project — a ‘street paving festival’ of sorts — that will cover a 2.3-mile stretch of the main downtown avenues with fresh layers of asphalt.

The work will last about a year and be done in phases, starting Feb. 27 with the construction of new sidewalks, curbs, lighting and guardrails on the north side of Lucerne Avenue at Golfview Road.

Crews will work their way west, redoing sidewalks, curbs and lighting on both avenues in sections, a process expected to take about six months. By the end of summer and early fall, the actual road resurfacing will begin.

DeSantis and Team Rebuild Bridge in Just Three Days!

Construction on the Pine Island bridge has been completed

just three days after construction began.

On October fifth, Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida Department of Transportation Secretary Jared W. Perdue announced the early completion of emergency road and bridge repairs to Pine Island.

On Sunday, DeSantis ordered Perdue to work with Lee county to expedite the repairs and to finish by Saturday, October eighth. The crews worked hard to complete the repairs under such ambitious timing and overperformed. The bridge was built in just three days.

It took six years for ROLOH to get a Quiet Zone for

the benefit of its neighborhood's quality of life

Per Tuesday night's agenda backup, the Palm Beach County Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) finds that the preliminary quiet zone cost estimate for the work in the County is around $17.9M. The County MPO has dedicated $6.6M in funding; however, there is an $11.3M deficit that must be borne by local municipalities or another agenda.

The MPO is hoping that the other agency can be the US Department of Transportation via its Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) program. The Palm Beach County and Broward County MPO’s are preparing a joint application for TIGER funding to supplement local funds designated by the MPO’s for quiet zone implementation. The application window is very short and requires accelerated work. (Final applications through Grants.gov by April 28, 2014, at 5:00 p.m. EDT (the “Application Deadline”) The MPO has asked affected municipalities to approve a resolution of support for the TIGER funding and sending a letter to the US Department of Transportation supporting the installation of additional safety equipment for quiet zones.

As with previous rounds of TIGER, funds for the FY 2014 TIGER program (“TIGER FY 2014”) are to be awarded on a competitive basis for projects that will have a significant impact on the Nation, a metropolitan area, or a region. Lake Worth has All Aboard Florida on its mind.

All Aboard Florida on the FEC track is supported by planners and cities that subscribe to sustainable development and walkable life styles...Agenda 21. It is all about land grabs. Expected to begin offering service by early 2015, All Aboard Florida would be the first passenger service on the FEC tracks since 1968. William Waters, director of community sustainability for Lake Worth, said the "added mobility could encourage people to move into walkable cities such as Lake Worth...You could live in Lake Worth and work in Fort Lauderdale. You could hop on a train and be at work quickly.”

DOT to do major overhaul of I-95 in Lake Worth

On Tuesday, March 18, 2014, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will host an informational Open /House for the I-95 skid hazard overlay project from north of 6th Avenue South to Lake Worth Road in the City of Lake Worth. The meeting will be held in the Lake Worth City Hall conference room from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m., located at 7 North Dixie Highway, Lake Worth, FL, 33460. Please note this will be just prior to the City Commission meeting that begins at 6 p.m.

Project personnel will be on hand to discuss the scope of work, construction schedule, and address questions and comments one-on-one. No formal presentation will be made.

This 0.5-mile project is scheduled to begin Friday, March 14, 2014, and is expected to be completed in late summer 2014, weather permitting. The construction cost is $1.8 million. Work is being performed by Ram Construction Services, with the Florida Department of Transportation overseeing the project.

In order to do this work safely, it will be necessary to close travel lanes at various times and locations. I-95 multilane and single-lane ramp closures can be expected from 9 p.m. until 6 a.m., Sunday night through Friday morning. During the final phase of construction in summer 2014, full nightly ramp closures can be expected at the I-95 southbound entrance and exit ramps at 6th Avenue South, 9 p.m. until 6 a.m., Sunday night through Friday morning.
