As Joe Biden’s deal to secure Brittney Griner’s release from a Russian prison did not include a release for Paul Whelan, on Thursday the U.S. Marine veteran expressed his dismay and that he was “greatly disappointed,” with the decision.

“I am greatly disappointed that more has not been done to secure my release, especially as the four-year anniversary of my arrest is coming up. I was arrested for a crime that never occurred. I don’t understand why I’m still sitting here,” Whelan said.

Viktor Bout is a Russian arms dealer who was arrested in Thailand in 2008 on charges of conspiring to sell weapons to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), a designated terrorist organization. He was extradited to the United States in 2010 and was subsequently convicted in a U.S. court on charges of conspiracy to kill U.S. citizens, among other offenses. He was serving a 25-year prison sentence in the United States.

Bout has been described as one of the world’s most prolific arms dealers, and his activities have been widely criticized by governments and human rights organizations.

The Biden administration decided to swap Bout for Brittney Griner, a WNBA player for the Phoenix Mercury who has been in a Russian prison since her arrest for illegal substances while in Russia got her handed a 9-year prison sentence just over 210 miles from Moscow since her arrest earlier this year.

On Thursday, President Joe Biden released Viktor Bout, a dangerous Russian weapons trafficker convicted on terrorism charges in 2011, in exchange for Brittney Griner, an American citizen who is serving a nine-year sentence in Russia on drug charges.

This dangerous prisoner swap has U.S. officials concerned that Bout will go right back to trafficking weapons across the world and potentially put American lives at risk.

The potential consequences of this decision are immense and could have disastrous implications for U.S.-Russia relations as well as global security. President Joe Biden and others who appear to think it’s appropriate to explore the possibility of releasing a Russian arm dealer Viktor Bout from prison in exchange for any U.S. citizen detained by Russia – be it Brittney Griner, Paul Whelan, or someone else – “are delusional and naive,” said Rob Zachariasiewicz in his op-ed for USA Today on July 17th.

Rob “Zach” Zachariasiewicz who made the statement was one of the Drug Enforcement agents behind the successful operation that ended in Bout’s arrest in 2008.

Bout, known as the “Merchant of Death” who fueled conflicts around the world, was a key player in numerous global illicit arm deals. According to official data, an enormous amount of resources and political capital was expended on the critical national security investigation into Bout’s actions prior to his arrest.
