Fracking

Let's talk about fracking

Hey there, folks! Let’s talk about something super important for our country – it’s called fracking. You might’ve heard that word a lot recently, especially with the big election right around the corner.

Fracking is all about using some smart technology to get natural gas and oil out of the ground, and it’s really important for states like Pennsylvania where lots of people have jobs because of it.

Now, in the big debate, President Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris had quite a chat about fracking. President Trump, who’s always been a supporter of energy jobs, says that Harris wants to get rid of fracking. Back in 2019, she did say she wanted to ban it. But now, she’s saying she won’t ban fracking. It’s got folks wondering where she really stands, especially since one of her campaign advisers recently said she wouldn’t “promote” new drilling.

Let’s get some facts straight! Did you know in Pennsylvania alone, over 400,000 jobs were from oil and natural gas in 2021? If Pennsylvania were a country, it would be among the top gas producers in the whole world! That’s a big deal.

Fracking has been a game-changer for America. It’s helped the country become more energy independent, which means we don’t have to rely so much on other countries for energy. Plus, fracking has helped lower our energy costs and has been part of the reason why our carbon emissions have dropped.

Fracking in Florida on a Temporary Moratorium

The bill, SB 318, by Sen. Garrett Richter, R-Naples, imposes a temporary moratorium on fracking permits until a study of Florida's hydrology is completed to determine what potential impact the operations will have on the state’s geology and fragile water supply.

Read about it... at the Tampa Bay Times.

CS/SB 318: Regulation of Oil and Gas Resources GENERAL BILL by Environmental Preservation and Conservation ; Richter Regulation of Oil and Gas Resources; Preempting the regulation of all matters relating to the exploration, development, production, processing, storage, and transportation of oil and gas; requiring that a permit be obtained before the performance of a high-pressure well stimulation; requiring the Division of Water Resource Management to give consideration to and be guided by certain additional criteria when issuing permits, etc. APPROPRIATION: $1,000,000.00 Effective Date: 7/1/2016 Last Action: 2/25/2016 Senate - On Committee agenda-- Appropriations, 03/01/16, 10:00 am, 412 Knott Building

Florida Fracking

Comment Up

"The measure, HB 191, allows the state to regulate and authorize the pumping of large volumes of water, sand and chemicals into the ground using high pressure to recover oil and gas deposits. It passed by a 73-45 vote with seven Republicans joining Democrats to oppose the measure.

It postpones the prohibition on fracking bans until a study on the impact of the state’s geology is completed in 2017. But the bill is also vigorously opposed by environmental groups and 41 cities and 27 counties — including Miami-Dade and Broward counties." Read more... at the Miami Herald.

Anti-Fracking Resolution on Agenda

Comment Up

TITLE:
Resolution No. 02-2016 - support a statewide prohibition on fracking to explore and produce oil and natural gas in Florida

SUMMARY:
The Resolution supports a statewide prohibition against the use of hydraulic fracturing, acid fracturing, and similar high pressure well stimulation practices, commonly called fracking, to extract underground oil and natural gas resources. Commissioner Maier requested this item be placed on the agenda.

At least the city is telling us who put what on the agenda.  I believe that this should not be on the Consent Agenda and deserves discussion. Support of this Resolution says the entire City of Lake Worth agrees.  It does not.

Hydraulic fracturing is a technology used to enhance the flow of energy from a well and is a 70 year old technology. It is not a “drilling technique;” fracturing can begin only when the drilling is done and the rig and derrick are removed. Fracking is thus a well “completion” technique. Once fracking is complete, a well can produce hydrocarbons for years, even decades, says Energy Indepth Florida.

Historic Perspective of hydraulic fracturing. They say that the process has been used on over 1 million producing wells. As the technology continues to develop and improve, operators now fracture as many as 35,000 wells of all types (vertical and horizontal, oil and natural gas) each year.

This is a misunderstood technology that has become political.  Democrats hate it.  Republicans understand the value and necessity of it.
