Hurricane free in September

Atlantic goes hurricane-free through September for first time in 32 years as Super El Niño builds

September closed without a single Atlantic hurricane for the first time in 32 years, as El Niño winds kept the basin quiet and the season’s eighth named storm stayed weak far from land.

FOX Weather reported that September ended with no hurricane forming in the Atlantic. Tropical Storm Hanna developed Monday morning over open waters in the Central Subtropical Atlantic and became only the eighth named storm of the season.

None of those eight storms strengthened into a hurricane. Hanna was expected to turn post-tropical by Wednesday night. Coastal communities got a rare break in what is usually the peak month for Atlantic activity.

Hostile winds driven by a strengthening El Niño have suppressed tropical development this year. It has been more than 330 days since the last Atlantic hurricane formed. That storm, Hurricane Melissa, developed on Oct. 13, 2025.

Hurricane Melissa was an historic, catastrophic Category 5 storm that devastated parts of the Caribbean in late October 2025 with peak sustained winds reaching 190 mph.
