Meta to pay New Mexico $25 billion for consumer-protection violations

New Mexico judge hits Meta with $25 billion judgment over data claims

"[It is the] single largest, if not the largest, single state verdict against the company in American history

A Santa Fe judge ordered Meta to pay New Mexico $25 billion for consumer-protection violations tied to the Cambridge Analytica scandal, a penalty Meta calls a tax on speech.

Judge Francis Mathew of the First Judicial District of New Mexico handed down the judgment after a jury found the company liable for more than 43 million violations of the state’s consumer protection laws. ABC News reported the ruling on October 21, 2026.

The case grew out of Facebook user data that flowed to Cambridge Analytica and later fueled targeted political ads in the 2016 general election. New Mexico sued on its own. Forty-eight other states settled similar claims.

Meta said it will appeal. Its chief legal officer framed the lawsuit as an attempt to police online speech under the banner of consumer law.
