Mural artist to be chosen for 601 Lake Avenue

Three finalists chosen to replace MLK mural in downtown Lake Worth Beach — Which is your favorite?

"Three Palm Beach County-based artists have been selected as finalists for a large-scale public mural in downtown Lake Worth Beach.

The winning mural will be chosen by the end of June to replace the fading Martin Luther King Jr. mural on the south exterior wall of the Cultural Council for Palm Beach County building at 601 Lake Ave.

The MLK mural, painted in 2017 by renowned Brazilian artist Eduardo Kobra, will be removed in the coming weeks as construction crews repair cracks and leaks in the wall. When the repairs are completed, the new mural will be painted, with an expected completion by early fall.

The three finalists for the new mural, chosen from 12 submissions, are West Palm Beach-based artist team AnĂ³n, made up of husband and wife Jhonattan and Samantha Arango; West Palm Beach-based artist Craig McInnis; and Boca Raton-based artist Trinity Rivard."

I guess if I have to choose one, all far removed from MLK, I like Trinity Rivard, Telling A Story. Which one do you like?

Arts Lofts of West Village

Residents say flooding left more than $10,000 in damages to Lake Worth Beach homes

'Turn this into a drainage area where the rain can actually go down,' Brandon Graham says

Flooding has people feeling drained at the Arts Lofts of West Village in Lake Worth Beach.

"I looked out my window here and this is where I first saw the flooding, it was all down here," said Christina Pritchard who lives in the Arts Lofts.

Neighbors said that the units along N F Street were built too low, causing their homes to flood when it rains.

"You can see the difference of the heights of the homes around us, look how high that is compared to this one," said Pritchard.

Pritchard said flooding brought six inches of water into some units and worries about the impact it has on residents.

Read about the flooding

And for some trivia:  REG was retained by Neighborhood Renaissance, a nonprofit organization, which was contracted with the City of Lake Worth CRA to provide conceptual design through construction administration services for the apartments.

The lofts were sold specifically to low and moderate-income working artist households to allow them the opportunity to grow their businesses in West Village. The lofts were built to certified Florida green building standards. The development consisted of eight 3-story townhomes designed with street level studio/ retail space along with a separate 2,000 SF “Class A” commercial-retail building.

More on Climate Change - Exhibits at Cultural Council

Cultural Council to Unveil Two Exhibits

The Cultural Council for Palm Beach County located at 601 Lake Avenue in Lake Worth Beach will unveil two striking exhibitions in its gallery spaces January 27. “Visualizing Climate Disruption,” on view to April 8, will take over the Main Gallery at the Cultural Council for Palm Beach County in Lake Worth Beach, while “Molly Aubry: Dark Luminosity” will command attention in the Solo Gallery to March 11.

In “Visualizing Climate Disruption,” more than 40 works by 15 artists will explore the effects of climate disruption and engage audiences in considering topics such as endangered species, shrinking habitats, pollution, and coastal resiliency.

Palm Beach County artists are uniquely positioned to observe the effects of climate disruption, as Florida is on the front lines of sea level rise, climbing temperatures, catastrophic storms, devastation of coral reefs, and disappearing seagrasses. The featured artists hope to collaborate with scientists to create interactive materials and educational programming that reaches and inspires broad audiences.

Residents at the Arts Loft on Lucerne getting flooded out of their homes

Lake Worth Beach residents upset as homes flood during rain

Residents plead for any help they can get

Well, they have been pleading for sometime now but they have not heard back from the City. The developer says it is the City's fault.

"We're looking at the drainage of 6 inches of water that flooded into our homes," said Marcele Bassett, who lives in the West Village Arts Lofts along North F Street and Lucerne Avenue.

"When I stepped down, my foot just splattered in water and my heart just broke because I knew we had missed our opportunity to try and save the furniture and our belongings," said Bassett.

Bassett said the flooding is a reoccurring issue he said has cost him nearly $70,000 in damages.

Lake Worth, Fl – CANVAS Outdoor Museum Show expanding to Lake Worth

CANVAS OUTDOOR MUSEUM SHOW EXPANDS TO DOWNTOWN LAKE WORTH LAKE WORTH, Fla. (October 17, 2017) ---

CANVAS OUTDOOR MUSEUM TM SHOW, the nation’s largest outdoor museum show, is expanding to the City of Lake Worth this year. Artists from around the globe will assemble in Downtown Lake Worth for one-week from November 26 – Dec. 2 to transform the city’s streets into a world-class outdoor museum. Blank walls will be re-imagined with colossal murals, and monumental shipping containers, art installations and interactive sculptures will be showcased in high-profile locations within walking distance of the Downtown corridor.

“CANVAS is leaving a permanent footprint for visitors to enjoy year-round. It’s very exciting to bring this caliber of public art to the heart of Downtown Lake Worth to define a thriving arts district,” said CANVAS Outdoor MuseumTM Show founder and curator Nicole Henry. “When curating this year’s show, artists were selected based on their innovative ideas and interactive components to their work. We really want visitors to experience and interact with the art around the city.”

Participating artists will embrace this year’s theme of “unity” by expressing how art brings people together when there is so much division in the world. Visitors will be able to interact with artists working in real time to create public masterpieces. CANVAS will announce the artists and locations leading up to the live artwork.

The City of Lake Worth, Lake Worth Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) and the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County worked collaboratively to bring this event to the city. Additional donations will be provided by 120 SPACE and Florida Food & Farm.

“We are very excited to welcome the expansion of CANVAS to the City of Lake Worth”, said City of Lake Worth Mayor Pam Triolo. “Since its inception, Lake Worth has been the place in Palm Beach County where art is created. CANVAS joins our Street Painting Festival and Biblioarte in attracting world renowned artists to our streets and continuing our artistic vision. We couldn’t be more excited and honored!”

The City, CRA and Cultural Council are also working on finalizing an Arts & Cultural Master Plan for Downtown Lake Worth, which will be the first of its kind in Palm Beach County when it is released early next year. Adding CANVAS to the city’s lineup of major cultural events supports the strategic plan.

“We are thrilled to welcome CANVAS to our City, said Madlyn McKendry, Chair of the Lake Worth CRA. “This event highlights our continued redevelopment efforts that include projects with an artistic flair. Along with our local mural program, the new Hatch 1121 space and ethnically diverse events CANVAS and add a new element of creativity to our downtown canvas.”

CANVAS will also bring an important tourism component to the City of Lake Worth and to Palm Beach County.

It will also bring high-profile international artists to the city - each with their own following - that only adds to the excitement.”

Right-wing Street Artist Roasts Google

Right-wing street artist “Sabo” made headlines on Friday after he posted street art near Google’s Los Angeles offices eviscerating the technology company for recently firing an engineer who held opinions contrary to the biases of the company.

It's about time that the Right stops being doormats to liberal bias. No protesting, just the power and stroke of the brush.

Peter D'amico, a fine artist

It took me a very long time to buy a Peter D'amico painting. Although I always loved and admired his art for years, it just didn't go with my decor which is all animal and earth tones. But when he died a few weeks ago, I bought this painting and actually found a spot where it "works."

Proceeds from the sale of his paintings (only three are left..Click here to view) at the House of Frames on Lake Avenue will go towards Peter D'amico's cremation costs at All County.

If you want to have a lovely colorful piece of art that will go towards a good cause, visit the House of Frames, 1510 Lake Avenue.

Artist Peter D'amico died

I stopped into the House of Frames today to see how the folks were...had not seen them in awhile. While I was waiting, I was looking and admiring the art by Peter D'amico, an amazing Lake Worth artist who has been around this town for 40 years. I bought one of his paintings.

You used to see him at the Cultural Plaza on Friday nights. His talent with colors was amazing. I was told that he died from an overdose two weeks ago. Within one week, his brother Dino, who used to help him sell his paintings, died from the same thing.

His and his brother's body is at All County Funeral Home and Crematory on Lake Avenue.

Too many people are dying from overdoses in Lake Worth and Peter's life as well as his brother's was worth living.

J Street is really buzzing

Lake Worth is buzzing with artists and J Street is the place to go for art, coffee and fun. Now we have a new store that recently opened at 16 S. J Street--Urquijo Photo Image. Don't bother asking me how to pronounce it but the owner/photographer says he is into multi-venue photography.

When I told him that I love to photograph sunsets he then told me that he does everything--I guess that means sunsets too.

So if you need a photographer for a wedding or an upcoming event or project, call Christiun at 954-706-6650.
