Democrats in swing states love a good family ad. Dad at the grill. Kids on the lawn. Maybe a golden retriever for good measure. The messaging is always warm, relatable, aggressively normal. It’s designed to make you forget that the candidate’s actual policy positions would make your head spin.

But here’s the thing about family ads — they’re curated. And sometimes the most telling detail isn’t who made the final cut. It’s who got edited out. In Michigan right now, a Democratic Senate candidate is running a slick campaign built on heartland imagery and kitchen-table promises. One very important family member, however, didn’t make the reel. Wonder why.

Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed’s half-sister is a far-left University of Chicago professor who has advocated for a “stateless, communized society,” called for abolishing police, was arrested during an anti-ICE protest for spitting on a cop, celebrated the October 7, 2023 massacre, and has called for a “student intifada.”
