Contract with PBSO all up in the air over immigration enforcement

Lake Worth Beach commissioners did not take a vote on a new policing contract

with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office during Tuesday’s meeting

But one commissioner used the closing comments to signal that immigration enforcement remains a central concern as the agreement returns for consideration.

Commissioner Christopher McVoy said the city has a legal basis to limit the use of local law enforcement resources for federal immigration enforcement.

McVoy pointed to a recent federal court decision involving Washtenaw County, Michigan, where the court dismissed the U.S. Department of Justice’s challenge to local policies that limited assistance to federal immigration authorities.

“The federal government cannot force us to do things,” McVoy said, arguing Lake Worth Beach should not dilute local policing resources with federal immigration enforcement. “We have a legal basis to push back. And we should.”
