A homeless encampment stretching roughly 12 blocks along Manhattan's West Side, from the Intrepid Museum to the Jacob Javits Center, continues to grow while Mayor Zohran Mamdani offers vague promises and the NYPD waits for permission to act.

The sprawl of tents, trash, and reported illegal activity sits in one of the most visible corridors in New York City, steps from tourist attractions and a major convention center, and it exists in large part because the mayor made dismantling such camps harder the moment he took office.

Mamdani campaigned on a promise to stop encampment sweeps. He kept that promise. Then, facing public pressure, he introduced a revised policy requiring seven days of outreach by city workers before any encampment can be cleared.

The result, on full display along 11th Avenue between West 34th and West 46th Streets, is a 12-block stretch of disorder that residents, workers, and visitors say has made the area unrecognizable.

The mayor told reporters the site "has been noticed and it will be cleared." But he declined to say when the seven-day clock actually starts, a detail that matters when the encampment keeps expanding.

"The NYPD has not been given the green light to clean this encampment up, but we are ready to do so." 

That single sentence captures the dysfunction. The officers are willing. The authority hasn't come. And so the camp grows while the mayor's outreach teams visit the site and, by Fox News Digital's account, primarily collect trash.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), which is a member of the White House fraud task force led by Vice President JD Vance, is immediately suspending the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority’s (LAHSA) federal funding while HUD’s inspector general investigates potential offenses by the agency and its leadership.

The City Controller’s Office found that LAHSA failed to spend $513 million in public funds during fiscal year 2024. The excuse? Not enough staff and outdated technology. So they couldn’t spend the money. And when they did manage to spend it, they couldn’t tell anyone where it went. Remarkable.

The numbers are brutal. The state comptroller’s office says New York City shelled out about $81,000 per unsheltered homeless person last year. That’s cash going into a system that still leaves people on the streets.

That per-person figure lines up with a total bill in the hundreds of millions. Spending on the Department of Homeless Services’ Street Homeless Solutions division has more than tripled since 2019. The unsheltered population went up too. More money. Worse results.

Think about that. You could hand someone a life-changing check with that kind of cash. Instead, tens of thousands of dollars are funneled through programs, contracts, bureaucracies, and vendors. The outcome? Folks still living on sidewalks.

Budget projections show the city may spend nearly $97,000 per street homeless person this year to fund Mamdani's expanded outreach and housing efforts.

This smells like an industry. And not a healthy one. When solving the problem creates steady jobs and big contracts, the incentives get twisted. Officials pat themselves on the back for big budgets. But the street count barely budges. It rises.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise didn't mince words on Tuesday. The Louisiana Republican tied the deaths directly to Mamdani's leadership — and used them to frame the stakes of a looming DHS funding fight that Democrats appear determined to sabotage.

Since Friday's press conference, one additional New Yorker lost their life on the streets of our city as a result of this cold snap. The total lives lost is now 18. Each life lost is a tragedy, and we will continue to hold their families in our thoughts.

Democrats are playing a funding game with agencies that exist to keep Americans alive during emergencies.

The fight isn't actually about ICE, despite what Democratic messaging suggests. ICE is fully funded. It received an injection of billions of dollars from President Trump's "big, beautiful bill" last year.

Democrats have taken issue with that funding specifically, but Scalise argued their obstruction of DHS funding goes well beyond immigration enforcement — it threatens the entire homeland security apparatus.

A new downtown business owner is sounding the alarm about what she's seeing behind her shop, adding to a growing number of concerns about safety and behavior in Lake Worth Beach's Cultural Plaza. The increase in complaints is prompting city leaders to consider new action ahead of next week's commission meeting.

'It seems like a great area, it just has to be cleaned up a bit,' Mia Cozier tells WPTV. Business owners and neighbors said the Cultural Plaza has seen a noticeable spike in concerning activity in recent months. One of the newest to speak out is Mia Cozier, who opened her juice bar, You Got The Juice, less than a week ago directly across from the plaza.

"It seems like a great area, it just has to be cleaned up a bit," Cozier told WPTV. Cozier said she began noticing troubling behavior almost immediately — and is worried it could hurt foot traffic and deter customers. "A lot of business owners in this area invest a lot of money in their businesses," she said. "I don't want them to scare away the clientele."

To better understand what was happening behind her building, Cozier installed a camera. What she found, she says, has been alarming.

"We would come in the morning and it would smell weird. People will take showers back there, we would find soap, we would find clothes back there. I just found condoms back there," she said, adding that she has also encountered drug paraphernalia.

The State of Washington spent $5 billion on homelessness prevention programs over the last 12 years, but there has been little measurable impact so far. There are currently more homeless people in Washington than at any point since at least 2016.

Yet according to the state's biannual Snapshot of Homelessness reports, there are currently more people in need of housing than ever. Washington had 126,091 homeless people in January 2016, but 158,791 people in January 2025 — a 26% increase.

Washington's total population has only grown by 9% since 2016, meaning homelessness is outpacing population growth despite an unprecedented amount of spending designed to prevent that trend.

Washington will spend $1.8 billion on homeless services and housing in 2026 and 2027, or $900 million per year.

This trend is primarily driven by its strong support for Democrats in urban areas like King County (Seattle), which contains nearly a third of the state's voters.

LAKE WORTH BEACH, Fla. — The growing homeless population at Bryant Park is raising safety and business concerns in downtown Lake Worth Beach. Business owners said the issue is starting to affect foot traffic, particularly during the slower summer months.

Andy Amoroso, who has owned The Tacky Tourist downtown for more than 30 years, said the situation has worsened over time. He recently intervened when a homeless individual aggressively approached three elderly women walking downtown.

"They panhandle, they get right up on people," Amoroso said. "And if you're a tourist or visitor, you don't feel safe."

A recently passed Florida statute now allows residents and business owners to sue local governments that knowingly permit overnight sleeping in public spaces. Lake Worth Beach prohibits camping in parks, but enforcement is limited. Meanwhile, the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office (PBSO) must weigh the city's policies, state law, and its own internal rules before removing individuals.

President Donald Trump on Friday signed an executive order to establish a national center for homeless veterans with redirected funds previously spent on services for illegal aliens, Fox News Digital has reported.

The president’s order directs the secretary of veterans affairs to establish the National Center for Warrior Independence on the Veterans Affairs campus in West Los Angeles.

Los Angeles has approximately 3,000 homeless veterans — more than any other city in the country, and accounting for about 10% of all homeless veterans in America, according to the White House.

"The new National Center for Warrior Independence will help them and other veterans like them rebuild their lives," the White House said.

A new Florida law goes into effect Oct. 1 that prohibits unauthorized people from sleeping or camping on public property.

That includes homeless people that have historically found overnight shelter in parks.

By a vote of 6-3, the Supreme Court justices agreed that the ban on camping on public property by anyone does not violate the Constitution’s ban on cruel and unusual punishment. Justices can't dictate the nation's homelessness policy.

Governor Ron DeSantis signed HB 1365 to keep Florida’s streets safe. This legislation requires counties to ensure that homeless individuals receive the mental health and drug addiction services they need while residing in a designated location off our public streets, prioritizing public safety.

Local governments could be required to pony up big money to meet the demands of legislation Gov. Ron DeSantis signed barring homeless people from either camping or sleeping on public property.

The legislation, which takes effect on Oct. 1, requires local governments to designate a public space for camping or sleeping if shelter spaces are full. Local governments must also provide security, behavioral health services and bathrooms with running water, but Tallahassee is not sending additional money so that local governments can fulfill that mandate.

City officials are still looking into what the legislation, H.B. 1365, might mean for them.

So, what will Lake Worth Beach, that has tons of homeless as well as Palm Beach County, do?

With more and more illegals being dumped into our state, every city will have a huge expensive problem. Perhaps DeSantis can ship them to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.

The guy in the video says the solutions begin with neighborhood groups forming, and being very vocal about Homeless issues, and by bringing lawsuits occasionally when needed to keep town government interest up.

I think we need a cause most people in Lake worth or West Palm can get behind---that Families have a RIGHT to buy a home in a "neighborhood" that is culturally or socioeconomically aligned with their own backgrounds and general behaviors.

• 1. It is fair to say that bad neighborhoods DO EXIST, and these typically involved many criminals living within these areas and preying on their neighbors. Obvious examples exist in Lake Worth and can be validated by the Sheriff's office.

• 2. It is fair to say that a mother and father have a Moral DUTY to attempt to have a HOME in a neighborhood that is low in crime, and high in good moral values.

o Families have a right to buy a home in an area where there are cultures known to be homogeneous or non-competitive with their own. This is reactive to our knowledge that there are cultures that believe in destroying other cultures, such as Hamas or Palestinian cultures which have shown they believe it is good to attack Jewish or Israeli people or cultures. Similarly, this relates to a low-class criminal, believing that it is good to target a specific race or neighborhood as ideal to steal from.

o Good mothers and fathers have a duty to their children to attempt to AVOID neighborhoods where such criminal and anti-cultural crimes take place, and Towns SHOULD BE HELD LIABLE for actions by the town and its law enforcement, that would obviously degrade a good neighborhood that families have “bought into” with life savings or major financial commitments, in order to protect the future of their children and family in general.

3. Neighborhoods should have attorneys and funds raised to pursue this form of legal protection.

• 4. We could call this a "Reverse Gentrification Lawsuit," where bad actions -- or NO Actions by a Town, can be shown to destroy personal investments and to be destructive to the culture and family protections provided by good neighborhoods.

• 5. We need to assert that families have a right to live in good neighborhoods if they can afford to and that families have a right to desire to live in a safe, low crime neighborhood with other people holding similar American cultural values.

o This suggests that an influx of illegal aliens into a “good neighborhood” from a nation that is either collectivist, or counter-culture (with piracy as a preferred way of life), is something that a Town, City or State has an absolute duty to protect against. The duty of the Government is to keep legal families living in good neighborhoods, safe; This duty is a Categorical Imperative, while the “obligation” to find a place for displaced aliens or the Homeless is a lesser duty, and one that is eliminated when it conflicts with the Categorical Imperative Duty of protecting good American neighborhoods.

o Allowing tent cities and homeless encampments in good neighborhoods violates the implied duty of government to protect good neighborhoods from crime and against reverse gentrification.
