Bessent: 15 Percent Global Tariff Starts This Week

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Wednesday that an increase in President Donald Trump's new temporary global import tariff to 15% from 10% was likely to be implemented sometime this week.

The new tariff rate was announced by Trump in late February after the Supreme Court struck down his previous global tariffs under a national emergencies law. He initially imposed the 150-day tariffs under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974 at a lower 10% rate.

"That's likely sometime this week," Bessent said on CNBC of the 15% rate order from Trump.

"During the 150 days, we will see studies from USTR on Section 301, tariffs from Commerce on Section 232," he said, referring to other tariff authorities that have withstood court challenges.

He said the effort to rebuild Trump's tariff program under these authorities would bring U.S. duty rates back to their prior levels within five months.

President Donald Trump announced Friday that he has signed an executive order imposing a 10% global tariff on all countries, saying the measure will take effect "almost immediately."

Posting on Truth Social, Trump said it was his "Great Honor" to sign the order from the Oval Office, describing it as a "Global 10% Tariff on all Countries."

The move comes just hours after the Supreme Court struck down his earlier attempt to implement tariffs under emergency authorities.

In a second post, Trump sharply criticized the justices who ruled against his prior tariff plan.

"Those members of the Supreme Court who voted against our very acceptable and proper method of TARIFFS should be ashamed of themselves," he wrote. "Their decision was ridiculous but, now the adjustment process begins, and we will do everything possible to take in even more money than we were taking in before!"

Dem Censorship Scam Unravels

House committee is currently probing the State Department’s Global Engagement Center (GEC) regarding concerns of potential government-funded censorship.

This inquiry aligns with a lawsuit filed by The Daily Wire and The Federalist, alleging that the State Department financed technology used to censor and financially harm domestic media outlets with certain political views.

In a recent development, Republican Representatives Roger Williams and Beth Van Duyne sent a letter to James Rubin, the coordinator of the GEC. They expressed dissatisfaction with the GEC’s delayed and seemingly incomplete information provided to Congress, which they believe is insufficient to understand the full extent of GEC-funded activities.

The lawsuit involving The Daily Wire, The Federalist, and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton against the State Department alleges that the department is funding efforts to limit the reach and revenue of media outlets with certain political leanings, particularly conservative ones.

The lawsuit seeks to halt what is claimed to be a deliberate effort to use censorship technologies to target these media outlets.
