Seattle mayor fires police chief after mass shooting failures, then faces backlash from racial justice groups

Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson fired Police Chief Shon Barnes after a botched response to a deadly food festival shooting, and now faces organized protests from civil rights organizations that call the move racially motivated.

Barnes, 55, was out of town at a law enforcement conference in Dallas when gunfire tore through the Bite of Seattle food festival on a Sunday evening, killing three people and wounding four others, including a two-year-old boy.

The Seattle Police Department then waited roughly five hours before holding its first public briefing, issued statements containing factual errors, and never activated AlertSeattle, the city's emergency notification system, to warn residents that at least one armed suspect remained at large.

By Wednesday evening, Wilson had seen enough. Fox News reported that the mayor called Barnes into a meeting and asked him to resign. He refused. She fired him on the spot, just hours after the two had stood side by side at a silent vigil for the shooting victims.

By Thursday, a coalition of racial justice organizations, the NAACP, the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle, Byrd Barr Place, and Community Passageways, had organized a rally at city hall to protest the dismissal. Speakers cast Barnes's firing in explicitly racial terms.

A Madison officer was stabbed Wednesday while trying to arrest a man caught prowling parked cars. The criminal, Corey Ruiz, 38, was taken to a hospital after the shooting and died there.

ABC World News Tonight anchor Linsey Davis opened with "growing outrage" over the shooting, without once mentioning that an officer had been stabbed.

NBC alone told viewers that public records showed criminal Ruiz with at least 40 criminal convictions, several of them for resisting or fighting officers. Court filings reviewed by CNN show Ruiz pleaded guilty since 2021 to charges including resisting police and battery against an officer.

Bystander video verified by NBC News captured people screaming "he's got a knife" seconds before the shots were fired.

Correspondent Pierre Thomas then spent a minute and forty-three seconds walking through video before he mentioned the officer's injury at all. Even then, Thomas buried it inside a sentence built to protect the suspect, not inform the viewer. He told America that "authorities claim the officer who fired the shot was injured by the knife."

In the clip, an officer appears to say something along the lines of, “Do you have 350 FBI agents there right at this moment?” or “You got 350 FBI agents there ready to deploy.”

The background noise makes the full exchange hard to hear, so caution is fair, but the number is what has people paying attention. If police on the ground were discussing hundreds of FBI personnel being ready to deploy, that raises obvious questions about who was there, what roles they had, and why the public had to wait years to hear this audio.

Ohio police chief faces 70-count child sex indictment, arrested in Florida

A Clermont County grand jury has indicted Bethel, Ohio, Police Chief Chad Essert on 56 counts of sexual battery and 14 counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, 70 felony charges that carry a combined maximum sentence of 280 years in prison. The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office took the 44-year-old into custody Tuesday night in Seminole, Florida, without incident.

Essert now sits in the Pinellas County Jail awaiting extradition back to Ohio to face the charges. Every count is a third-degree felony. The alleged victim, authorities say, was a student of Essert's.

Fox News Digital reported that the alleged offenses span from 2005 to 2010, a period during which Essert served as an instructor at the "Young Marines" and as a teacher at Scarlet Oaks Career Campus in Sharonville, Ohio. The crimes are alleged to have occurred across multiple locations in both Clermont and Hamilton counties.

But the facts already in the public record tell a damning story about institutional failure. A man left one police job in 2010 under allegations of sexual harassment and witness intimidation. He was later entrusted with a police chief's badge. And now a grand jury says he committed 70 felonies against a child during the years he was supposed to be mentoring and teaching young people.

If the system worked the way it should, this indictment would not have taken this long, and Chad Essert would never have been given a second badge to hide behind.

173 House Democrats refuse to back resolution honoring law enforcement as officer assaults hit decade high

A GOP-authored House resolution paying tribute to law enforcement officers passed Wednesday with bipartisan support, but 173 House Democrats voted against it, even as an FBI report released days earlier showed assaults on officers had climbed to a 10-year high.

Every Republican lawmaker present voted yes. Just 29 Democrats crossed the aisle to join them. The rest of the Democratic caucus, led by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, voted no, turning what the resolution's author expected to be a unanimous show of gratitude into a stark partisan divide over policing in America.

The vote landed during National Police Week, the same week officers gathered on the National Mall to honor 109 colleagues who died in the line of duty in 2025.

It also came two days after the FBI published data showing that while officer deaths dipped slightly between 2024 and 2025, assaults against law enforcement climbed to levels not seen in a decade.

"Whereas rhetoric and policies from leftist activists and progressive politicians seek to defund or dismantle local police departments undermine public safety and place both officers and the communities they serve at greater risk."

That language, naming "leftist activists and progressive politicians" as threats to public safety, apparently proved too much for the overwhelming majority of Democrats. It also credited the Trump administration's policies with contributing to the crime decline, a framing Democrats were unwilling to endorse.

Lake Worth Beach man accused of using AI-generated deepfake video in false crime report

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — A Lake Worth Beach man was arrested in Puerto Rico after investigators determined he used an artificial intelligence-generated deepfake video to file a false crime report with the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office, authorities announced Wednesday.

Investigators said the incident began on March 24, when a Seminole County deputy was inside a retail store in Lake Mary and was approached by a man who claimed he had seen several people entering the deputy’s marked patrol vehicle in the parking lot.

The man showed the deputy a short video on his cellphone that appeared to depict two individuals getting into the patrol vehicle.

The deputy immediately went outside to check the vehicle but found no indication that it had been disturbed or that anything was missing. A review of store surveillance footage later showed that no one approached the patrol vehicle during the time frame described by the man.

A warrant for Martínez-Arizala’s arrest was issued on March 27. On April 8, he was located and arrested in San Juan, Puerto Rico, by an officer assigned to the U.S. Marshals Service Task Force on the outstanding Seminole County charges, according to the news release.

On Tuesday, the Sheriff came back to the OMG headquarters and served James with a domestic violence restraining order.

The domestic violence restraining order was from Matthew Tyrmand, a former Project Veritas board member.

"Palm Beach County Sheriff's Department just served me with a domestic violence restraining order from Matthew Tyrmand. The former board member from Project Veritas who said he wants to murder me," James O'Keefe said.

A man was detained for questioning Tuesday night in the kidnapping of Nancy Guthrie.

The apprehension came after the FBI released surveillance videos of a masked person wearing a handgun holster outside Guthrie’s front door the night she vanished from her Arizona home.

It has not been determined if the man who was detained for questioning, nine days after the 84-year-old mother of U.S. television host Savannah Guthrie was reported missing, is the same person seen in surveillance video.

The department and the FBI were conducting a court-authorized search Tuesday night at a location in Rio Rico, about an hour’s drive south of Tucson, the department said in a statement. It was expected to take several hours.

The department did not immediately provide details about the person or the location. The FBI referred questions to the sheriff’s office.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department detained the man being questioned by law enforcement during a traffic stop south of Tucson, the agency said.

A forensic analysis of a female former U.S. Capitol Police officer’s gait is a 94%-98% match to the unique stride of the long-sought Jan. 6 pipe-bomb suspect, according to a Blaze News investigation confirmed by several intelligence sources.

A source close to a congressional investigation of Jan. 6 additionally told Blaze News evidence has emerged recently that pointed toward law enforcement possibly being involved in the planting of the pipe bombs.

A software algorithm that analyzes walking parameters including flexion (knee bend), hip extension, speed, step length, cadence, and variance rated pipe bomber of Alexandria, Va., as a 94% match to the bomb suspect shown on video from Jan. 5, 2021. The veteran analyst who ran the analysis for Blaze News said that based on visual observations the program can struggle with, he personally pegged the match at closer to 98%.

Pipe bomber was a Capitol Police officer for four and a half years, left the department in mid-2021 for a security detail at the Central Intelligence Agency, sources told Blaze News.

Former FBI Special Agent Kyle Seraphin realized Friday that he was doing surveillance next door to the woman now suspected of being the Jan. 6 pipe bomber.

“The FBI put us one door away from the pipe bomber within days of January 6, and we were deliberately pulled away for no logical or logically investigative reason,” Seraphin told Blaze News Friday. “And everything about that tells me that they were involved in a cover-up and have been since day one.

Illegal immigrants were behind the attack on a Border Patrol convoy that sparked a dangerous car chase and riot in Chicago, officials confirmed Wednesday while decrying the “growing and dangerous” trend of violence against federal agents.

Venezuelan nationals Yonder Enrique Tenefe-Perez and Luis Gerardo Pirela-Ramirez, who are in the US illegally, were identified as the suspects accused of ramming into a Border Patrol SUV driving through Chicago’s Southeast Side Tuesday morning, the Department of Homeland Security told Fox News.

The pair were arrested soon after the alleged attack, but not before it spread chaos across the neighborhood and culminated in a car wreck and a mob of protesters hurling objects at the federal agents.

Police arrived to help the federal agents and tear gas was eventually fired into the crowd, and law enforcement was able to regain control of the situation.

“As Border Patrol arrested the subjects and attempted to secure the scene a crowd began to form and eventually turned hostile and eventually crowd control measures were used,” the DHS said.

Bodies are piling up on the streets of Chicago over Labor Day weekend – with 54 shot, including seven killed, as President Trump and Illinois Gov. Pritzker spar over sending the National Guard into the Windy City.

At least 32 separate shootings occurred in Chicago between Friday evening and noon on Monday, according to a review of police incident reports by ABC News.

Just hours after Trump posted a message on Truth Social on Saturday criticizing Pritzker’s handling of crime in the city, at least seven people were shot around 11:10 p.m. in Bronzeville. All of the people are expected to be okay.

Trump called the governor “weak and pathetic” for dismissing the need for a National Guard presence in the Windy City in the social media post.

“National Guard troops or any kind of troops on the streets of an American city don’t belong unless there is an insurrection, unless there is truly an emergency – and there is not,” Pritzker said of the situation in Chicago.

He also vowed to sue the Trump administration if troops are indeed deployed.

At least six people were shot and one person slashed in separate incidents following the West Indian Day Parade in Brooklyn on Monday, according to the NYPD.

At an Aug. 30 press conference, Johnson added that his order “affirms” that Chicago police will not “collaborate with military personnel or civil immigration enforcement.”

The mayor’s order bars city police from assisting federal agents in immigration or joint patrols, calls on federal officers to identify themselves and wear body cameras, and directs city departments to explore legal and legislative steps to resist federal actions. It also urges President Donald Trump to “stand down” from deploying troops.

“We will not have our police officers, who are working hard every single day to drive down crime, deputized to do traffic stops and check stops for the president,” he said, adding that, “we do not want to see tanks on our streets.”
