18 Republicans Buck Trump to Pass $9 Billion Ukraine Aid

The House of Representatives approved a new package on Thursday that adds another round of aid for Ukraine and tighter sanctions on Russia. The vote landed at 226 to 195. Eighteen Republicans voted yes, along with one independent who often votes with the GOP.

The bill includes sanctions on Russian banks, oil companies, and mining firms. It also bars Russian oil imports and sets 500% tariffs on other Russian imports into the United States. On top of that, it extends Biden’s lend-lease program for Ukraine by $8 billion so Kyiv can keep buying weapons. Another $1 billion goes toward security and reconstruction aid.

The move came at a time when Trump is pushing both sides toward negotiations instead of more escalation. After Zelensky sent a letter calling for face-to-face talks with Putin, Trump said, “I think it would be great if they met” and urged them to “get it done.”

The vote shows how divided Republicans still are on Ukraine. Some want a harder line against Russia. Others want Washington to stop writing checks and let Trump drive the peace push. For now, the House sent a loud message anyway: the fight over Ukraine is far from settled.

Tucker Carlson told his audience this week that President Donald Trump backed Israel in a war against Iran, and he sounded, by his own admission, "tormented" about it.

Speaking from Doha, Qatar, the former Fox News host called Israel "a completely insignificant country" with "no resources" and insisted America gets "nothing" from the relationship. It's a tidy line for a podcast monologue. It also falls apart the moment you look at the ledger.

The United States sends $3.8 billion a year to Israel. That is a fact Carlson and a growing chorus of right-leaning media figures cite as proof of a raw deal. What they leave out, consistently, conspicuously, is where that money goes. Most of it must be spent on American-made military equipment. The largest purchases flow to Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Raytheon, and General Dynamics. Those are American factories, American supply chains, and American paychecks.

Joseph Epstein, director of the Turan Research Center, laid out the return on investment in detail. The F-35 program alone supports 290,000 American jobs, generates $72 billion in annual economic output, and has produced a $173 billion order backlog.

Israel was the first country to use the F-35 in combat. Its real-world testing fed directly into improvements that helped drive over $40 billion in export sales. That is not charity. That is a business arrangement with a battlefield laboratory attached.

The relationship extends well beyond defense. Israeli investment in the United States has tripled to nearly $24 billion. Bilateral trade tops $49 billion. In New York alone, 600 Israeli-founded companies generated $19.5 billion in output last year and supported 57,000 jobs. Israeli firms are the second-largest source of foreign listings on NASDAQ.

These are not abstract numbers. They represent American workers drawing paychecks, American cities collecting tax revenue, and American capital markets benefiting from innovation incubated in a country Carlson dismisses as having "no resources." Israel's primary resource is human capital, engineers, scientists, entrepreneurs, and it exports that resource into the American economy at scale.

A Somali parliamentarian has pulled back the curtain on a staggering web of corruption, alleging that his government channels U.S. tax dollars meant for aid into a network of fraud and theft.

Dr. Abdillahi Hashi Abib, a Somali lawmaker on the House of the People's Foreign Affairs Committee of the Federal Parliament of Somalia, told U.S. media that foreign aid intended for health care, day care, and other programs is being diverted to benefit a select few while citizens go without help.

He provided over 400 gigabytes of expenditure records from July 2022 to June 2023, alleging inflated costs, fake advisers, cash withdrawals without documentation, and illegal spending by Somalia's executive branch.

The revelations have sparked intense debate over foreign aid accountability and oversight. Abib's claims suggest systematic corruption rather than isolated errors, raising concerns about how U.S. taxpayer money is tracked and monitored in overseas programs.

Abib’s findings, as reported by the Daily Caller, paint a grim picture of systemic looting, with over $3.5 billion in humanitarian assistance—90% from the U.S.—allegedly captured by family-run enterprises. He accuses officials, including the chairman of the Somali Disaster Management Agency, of funneling funds through relatives, amassing personal wealth while aid meant for the starving is sold in markets.

“This is not incidental nepotism. It is deliberate structural capture, designed to defeat oversight and facilitate theft,” Abib’s letter to authorities declared. That’s a polite way of saying the system is rigged to rob the vulnerable and mock the generosity of American taxpayers.

Over the past year, Abiib claimed that he had received threats from Somali government officials due to his activism and public statements. He alleged that these threats had made it unsafe for him to return to Mogadishu, further complicating his role as a parliamentarian.

Supreme Court Lets Trump Freeze $4B in Foreign Aid

The Supreme Court halted a lower court order that mandated the Trump administration to spend $4 billion in foreign aid, which it aimed to cut via a “pocket rescission.”

The high court’s Friday ruling marks the latest victory for the Trump administration on the Supreme Court’s emergency docket.

The unsigned order from the high court made clear that the ruling “should not be read as a final determination on the merits” of the case. Instead, the administration showed it was entitled to have the federal district court’s order halted at this point of litigation.

“The Government, at this early stage, has made a sufficient showing that the Impoundment Control Act precludes respondents’ suit, brought pursuant to the Administrative Procedure Act, to enforce the appropriations at issue here.

The Government has also made a sufficient showing that mandamus relief is unavailable to respondents. And, on the record before the Court, the asserted harms to the Executive’s conduct of foreign affairs appear to outweigh the potential harm faced by respondents,” the ruling said.

The Trump administration asked the Supreme Court earlier this month to block U.S. District Judge Amir Ali’s order requiring $4 billion in Congressionally-approved foreign aid to be prepared to be spent pending litigation, after various groups that receive foreign aid sued to compel the administration to spend the funds it aimed to axe via a “pocket rescission.”

And then we get the stupid dissenting opinion--Justice Elena Kagan wrote a dissent to the order, which Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Ketanji Brown Jackson joined. Kagan took aim at the majority’s decision to grant a stay, arguing the Trump administration had failed to show it would suffer irreparable harm by spending the foreign aid funds.

The move follows a dramatic reversal of law that had curbed the anti-corruption agencies and sparked rare wartime demonstrations.

Ukraine’s anti-corruption agencies said on Aug. 2 that they had uncovered a large-scale bribery scheme involving the procurement of military drones and electronic warfare equipment.

This came just days after the agencies’ independence was restored following mass protests over government efforts to curb their powers.

The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) said in a statement on Aug. 2 that the alleged plot involved a sitting lawmaker, current and former regional officials, National Guard personnel, and a corporate executive.

Investigators alleged that those involved had refined a scheme over the past two years to systematically siphon off funds allocated by local authorities for defense needs, and to secure “unfair benefits in particularly large quantities.”

Additionally, in December 2024 the U.S. provided a $20 billion loan to be paid back with interest from frozen Russian assets. The total amount of aid committed to the government of Ukraine is $128 billion.

President Donald Trump is among the Republicans who have long sought to terminate federal funding for National Public Radio and the Public Broadcasting Service, a pair of outfits whose unmistakable ideological bias and imbalanced coverage at taxpayers' expense have rankled conservatives. The call to defund the liberal networks goes back at least as far as the Nixon administration.

On May 1, Trump ordered the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to cut off the liberal propaganda networks' direct and indirect funding, noting both that "Americans have the right to expect that if their tax dollars fund public broadcasting at all, they fund only fair, accurate, unbiased, and nonpartisan news coverage" and that "no media outlet has a constitutional right to taxpayer subsidies."

The president's order was, however, vulnerable to legal challenges — especially since Congress holds the power of the purse.

To ensure the success and permanence of this defunding effort, the White House proposed that Congress cancel funding to public broadcasting for fiscal years 2026 and 2027. In addition to the proposed $1.1 billion in cuts to the CPB, the White House also requested that lawmakers cancel over $8 billion to various leftist projects disguised as foreign aid programs.

Not only that, this package cuts billions in wasteful foreign aid that has been spent on projects including $4 million for 'sedentary migrants' in Colombia, $643,000 for LGBTQI+ programs in the Western Balkans, $833,000 for 'transgender people, sex workers, and their clients and sexual networks' in Nepal, and many more."

House GOP leaders on Wednesday introduced a new border security bill designed to appease conservatives who are up in arms that Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-La.) foreign aid package excluded tougher measures to battle migration.

Johnson announced Wednesday morning that he was plowing ahead with sending aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan despite outspoken opposition from hard-line Republicans, many of whom were incensed that his plan excluded border security.

For months, the Speaker had said that any assistance for Kyiv must be paired with legislation to address the situation at the southern border.

Speaker Johnson said that the border security bill would move under a separate procedural rule from the Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan measures.

The Senate’s proposed $118.28 billion national security supplemental package allocates a whopping $60 billion in military aid to Ukraine. Only $20.23 billion is allocated to secure the US border amid what some are calling an unprecedented invasion of military-age males from Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, and China.

The bill also contains aid provisions. The aid package includes $14 billion in aid to Israel, $60 billion for Ukraine and $4.83 billion to Indo-Pacific nations. It also includes $10 billion in humanitarian aid to citizens in Gaza, your know, the Palestinians who voted in HAMAS as well as to the West Bank and Ukraine. This is money we don't have!

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced he would hold the first vote on the legislation on Wednesday. He may win the vote in the Senate and McConnell, a Republican, is siding with Schumer, a Democrat. It’s like we’ve stepped into an alternate universe where up is down and left is right but Mike Johnson says it's dead in the House.

On Monday, Johnson unveiled a proposal to send Israel $14.3 billion in military assistance funding, consistent with President Joe Biden's request.

BUT, To pay for the military assistance, Johnson proposed rescinding an equal amount of funds appropriated to the Internal Revenue Service through the Inflation Reduction Act, which Biden signed into law last year. The law, which did not actually lower inflation, aggressively expanded the IRS with $80 billion in funding over the next 10 years.

This is quite alarming, especially considering the current economic state of many Americans. And now Biden wants to give them $24 billion more.

The reality is that American taxpayers are paying for Ukraine’s seeds, fertilizers, and first responders’ salaries while the Ukrainian government continues to rank as the second most corrupt country in Europe.

According to CBS News, there are currently four criminal cases being investigated involving non-military aid, and a shocking 170 Ukrainian government officials have been charged with corruption just this year. This raises concerns about the diversion of aid, despite reassurances from Ukrainian politicians.

Many of our businesses have gone under thanks to the dreadful economy. Is it the responsibility of American taxpayers to prop up businesses in Ukraine, especially when many of our own are struggling to make ends meet themselves.

Zelensky who previously delivered a joint address in December, is making a push for more aid from the international community in his latest appeal to the United Nations earlier this week. President Joe Biden has requested an additional $24 billion in military and humanitarian aid for Ukraine on top of the $113 billion previously allocated.

With tensions between Ukraine and Russia continuing to escalate, it remains to be seen whether or not the United States will increase its investment in the conflict.
