Why the new Sixth Avenue South bridge still hasn't opened, more than year after work began

The opening of the Sixth Avenue South bridge, a major gateway to Greenacres, Palm Springs and Lake Worth Beach, has been delayed again and won't happen at least until the end of October.

Palm Beach County officials cited a new construction problem they have encountered in rebuilding the 50-year-old span across Lake Osborne, which closed to traffic in August 2023.

Inspectors found a damaged stormwater pipe while touring the site in September. The discovery followed one in May where officials learned that some of the concrete used to repair the bridge had failed to meet quality standards.

Officials in Greenacres, Palm Springs and Lake Worth Beach said the bridge is crucial for cars and trucks to reach their communities from Interstate 95, and its year-long closure has worsened traffic for residents, business owners and Palm Beach State College, one of the area's largest employers.

Sixth Avenue South bridge to stay closed into August after tests detect roadway problems

The Sixth Avenue South bridge, a major gateway to Greenacres, Palm Springs and Lake Worth Beach, has been closed for nearly a year and won't open in June as scheduled because of problems with its reconstruction.

A consultant found that the concrete used to repair the 50-year-old span across Lake Osborne didn't meet quality requirements and ordered its removal and replacement for a stretch of the roadway. That work will delay reopening until August, Palm Beach County officials said.

Lake Worth Beach City Manager Jamie Brown said the 50-year-old bridge needed to be renovated to meet the demand of the area's growing population.

"It was a long time coming," Brown said. "It was a very old bridge, like a lot of our infrastructure."

Another barge hits a bridge

Another barge collides with bridge, second time in a week!

A bridge near the Kerr Lock & Dam in Sallisaw, Oklahoma, was shut down on Saturday after it was struck by a barge.

“The Oklahoma Highway Patrol responded to Sequoyah County after a barge hit a bridge near the Kerr Lock & Dam.”

As one person said, "So, like the train derailments, now they are doing boats hitting bridges."

Royal Park Bridge Tender gets Deal

Bridge tender avoids prison, pleads guilty in deal approved by family of the late Carol Wright

THE BRIDGE TENDER controlling the Royal Park Bridge drawbridge when a woman walking across fell to her death last year will avoid prison after a judge approved a plea deal today Jan. 10.

Artissua Paulk of Greenacres will serve 18 months of house arrest and eight years of probation after pleading guilty to second manslaughter in the death of Carol Wright of West Palm Beach.

Paulk, who originally pleaded not guilty last year, also will write a letter of apology to each of Wright’s two sisters and complete 200 hours of community service under the deal approved by Palm Beach County Circuit Judge Scott Suskauer.

Paulk and her supervisor were fired by FDI last year. A civil lawsuit filed by Wright’s family against Florida Drawbridges Inc. was settled last summer, with the company agreeing to pay $8.3 million and enact a series of reforms.

DeSantis and Team Rebuild Bridge in Just Three Days!

Construction on the Pine Island bridge has been completed

just three days after construction began.

On October fifth, Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida Department of Transportation Secretary Jared W. Perdue announced the early completion of emergency road and bridge repairs to Pine Island.

On Sunday, DeSantis ordered Perdue to work with Lee county to expedite the repairs and to finish by Saturday, October eighth. The crews worked hard to complete the repairs under such ambitious timing and overperformed. The bridge was built in just three days.

Truck hits Bridge in Lake Worth (Beach)

"Palm Beach County Fire Rescue says the truck crashed into the bridge at 12th Ave South and the I-95 overpass. The road underneath the overpass is closed.

According to Lake Worth Beach city officials, the two western lanes of I-95 Southbound between 6th Ave S and Lantana Road will be closed as well." [WTVX]

Construction on this 0.579-mile project will begin Monday, November 2, 2015, in the City of Lake Worth. Work consists of widening 10th Avenue North, from Barnett Drive to “A” Street, including roadway approaches and bridges over I-95 and the railroad tracks to provide dual eastbound turn lanes onto I-95, widening the I-95 northbound entrance ramp to receive the newly constructed dual eastbound left turn lanes, and widening the existing three-lane I-95 southbound exit ramp to four lanes to provide dual left and dual right turns.

Other improvements include utility relocation, bridge construction, installation of barrier walls, curbs, sidewalks, guardrail, drainage, overhead signs, signing and pavement markings, signals, lighting, and retaining walls. This is the third of five interchange improvement projects throughout Broward and Palm Beach Counties. The combined project cost for all five projects is an estimated $32.5 million.

Lake Worth Bridge to undergo repairs

This is just a reminder as I have posted it before. Have had no problems crossing the Lake Worth bridge over the last few days but perhaps this is the day work began?

The City of Lake Worth would like to notify the residents, businesses and visitors of the City that the Lake Worth Bridge (FDOT SR 802 Bridge) as owned and maintained by the Florida Department of Transportation will be undergoing minor repairs and painting.

The work is scheduled to begin on Monday October 27, 2014 and last approximately 180 calendar days (6 months). The bridge will remain open to vehicular, pedestrian and vessel traffic as work progresses. FDOT will be shutting down one bridge span at a time therefore two way traffic will be relocated onto one bridge span making only one lane in each direction. Once the first bridge span is completed, the traffic control route will switch to the other bridge span.

Lake Worth bridge jumper's body found

Click on the Palm Beach Post Update on man who jumped over the Lake Worth bridge. His body was recovered on Monday but authorities are not giving details or his name until family is notified. 

After hearing from the property owner where the body was found, he said, "He was discovered floating in the Intracoastal Waterway behind our property.  We are on the point of the Intracoastal and Palm Beach Canal.  The police received a report from a pest control man working next door who witnessed the body floating.  At approximately 9:00 a.m., the West Palm Beach Sheriff’s office retrieved him by boat and brought him to my dock where they removed him from the water, examined him by a forensic team, and had the coroner’s office take him away."

DOT is painting and repairing the Lake Worth bridge expected to bring some traffic delays. The project will be completed next year.

Although not on the City's calendar, a public meeting on the scope of the project will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Lake Worth City Hall, 7 North Dixie Highway, according to the Sun Sentinel.

The Lake Avenue (Lake Worth) Bridge will have one outside lane closed intermittently, in each direction, 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 6, through Friday, Nov. 9, for routine maintenance.

The Royal Park Boulevard (Middle) Bridge will have the westbound outside lane closed, 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 7, for bridge inspection.
