Seattle mayor fires police chief after mass shooting failures, then faces backlash from racial justice groups

Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson fired Police Chief Shon Barnes after a botched response to a deadly food festival shooting, and now faces organized protests from civil rights organizations that call the move racially motivated.

Barnes, 55, was out of town at a law enforcement conference in Dallas when gunfire tore through the Bite of Seattle food festival on a Sunday evening, killing three people and wounding four others, including a two-year-old boy.

The Seattle Police Department then waited roughly five hours before holding its first public briefing, issued statements containing factual errors, and never activated AlertSeattle, the city's emergency notification system, to warn residents that at least one armed suspect remained at large.

By Wednesday evening, Wilson had seen enough. Fox News reported that the mayor called Barnes into a meeting and asked him to resign. He refused. She fired him on the spot, just hours after the two had stood side by side at a silent vigil for the shooting victims.

By Thursday, a coalition of racial justice organizations, the NAACP, the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle, Byrd Barr Place, and Community Passageways, had organized a rally at city hall to protest the dismissal. Speakers cast Barnes's firing in explicitly racial terms.

Trump Announces Gaza Breakthrough, Says Hamas Disarmament Deal Reached

"The Board of Peace reached a HISTORIC agreement for the COMPLETE DISARMAMENT of Hamas and all other armed groups in Gaza.

This is a monumental step toward lasting PEACE and SECURITY," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform, saying disarmament would take place in "carefully structured phases."

"As disarmament is completed, Israeli forces will withdraw, and the International Stabilization Force will work with a new Palestinian police force to take responsibility for Gaza being safe for its residents and its neighbors," he added, also thanking mediators from Egypt, Qatar and Turkey.

Under Trump's 20-point peace plan for Gaza, the second phase of the ceasefire was to involve Hamas's disarmament and a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from the territory.

The plan also provides for a group of Palestinian technocrats, the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG), to assume day-to-day governance during Gaza's transitional phase out of war.

Moreno Puts Fauci Back in the Hot Seat

Fauci Repeatedly Invoked the Fifth Amendment

Sen. Bernie Moreno of Ohio is not letting Dr. Anthony Fauci quietly walk away from the COVID-era questions that still hang over Washington like a bad smell in a sealed room.

According to the report, Moreno delivered a pointed response about Fauci reportedly pleading the Fifth during testimony. That matters because Fauci was not some back-office staffer nobody had ever heard of. He was one of the most visible public health officials in America during the pandemic, and his advice helped shape school closures, business restrictions, masking rules, vaccine pressure, and the daily lives of millions of families.

When a public figure with that much power refuses to answer certain questions under oath, Americans are allowed to notice. The Fifth Amendment Is a Right, Not a Magic Eraser.

In the Fauci case, he refused to answer one question in the three hour Senate hearing. To be clear, the Fifth Amendment is part of the Constitution, and every American has the right to avoid self-incrimination. Conservatives should defend that right even when the person using it is someone they do not trust.

Moreno cited a 2020 incident in Ohio where a mother was tased and arrested at a middle school football game for violating a face mask policy. Moreno stated that this exact event inspired him to run for office, before asking Fauci: "Who the f** do you think you were for doing that?"

But there is also a political and public accountability side to this. If a former top government official repeatedly invokes the Fifth during questioning, voters do not have to pretend it is just another boring legal footnote. The same crowd that told Americans to “follow the science” now seems far less eager to follow the questions.

Funny how that works.

An Iranian propaganda video titled "How to Kill Melania Trump" lays out methods for assassinating the first lady and ends with a direct threat against her 20-year-old son, the latest in a pattern of escalating threats from Tehran against the president's family.

The video, which surfaced on the social media platform X through the account @TheBelaaz, shows images of Melania Trump in a motorcade and at locations around New York City. It names specific designer stores where the first lady shops and describes those excursions as "suitable for operations by global freedom fighters." It goes further, suggesting the use of a nerve agent to poison clothing she might purchase.

The video closes with a threat aimed squarely at Barron Trump: "This is just the beginning. Barron Trump, wait for us."
