A 22-year-old state law requires proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote. The GOP wants the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold the law in the face of challenges from the Democratic Party.

Republicans are taking a major election integrity fight to the nation’s highest court as November’s midterm elections loom. Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Joe Gruters revealed in an Aug. 31 Breitbart News op-ed that the RNC is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold an Arizona law requiring proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote.

“At stake is a principle so basic that most Americans would be shocked it is even being debated: Can states verify citizenship before someone is added to their voter rolls?” Gruters wrote.

“The answer should be obvious,” he continued. “Citizenship is required to vote in federal elections. States should be allowed to check it.”

Jeffries threatens consequences after two Democrats rescue Republicans on key House vote

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries vowed a "serious response" after two centrist Democrats crossed party lines to save a failing Republican procedural vote, a move that forced nearly 200 Democrats into a politically painful floor vote on socialism.

Reps. Jared Golden of Maine and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington broke ranks on Tuesday to back a GOP procedural rule that was about to collapse under Republican defections. The rule passed 210, 208, and Democratic leadership wasted no time calling the move a betrayal. Without Golden and Gluesenkamp Perez, the measure would have failed, freezing the House Republican agenda for the week.

Jeffries, Democratic Whip Katherine Clark, and Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar released a joint statement that left little room for ambiguity. As the New York Post reported, leadership declared:

"The decision by two of our colleagues to blindside the entire House Democratic Caucus and join with the Republican majority to pass a procedural rule on the brink of failing represents a significant breach of trust."

Both defectors pointed to the same justification: the Northeast Lobsterman Protection Act, a bill bundled into the legislative package the rule unlocked. The bill delays the implementation of new fishing regulations aimed at protecting whales until 2035. It passed the House 219, 196 on Tuesday.

When 192 House Democrats would rather go on record refusing to condemn socialism than let two colleagues vote their districts, the leadership problem is not with the two who broke ranks.

4 House Democrats move to condemn socialism, DSA in resolution

The Democrats proposed replacing a Republican resolution with language condemning socialism and the Democratic Socialists of America while removing provisions related to election security and the SAVE America Act.

The amendment — offered by Democratic Reps. Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey, Hillary Scholten of Michigan, Jared Moskowitz of Florida, and Tom Suozzi of New York — targets H. Res. 1490, introduced Aug. 27 by Rep. Jeff Crank, R-Colo.

Crank’s resolution condemns socialism and the DSA while also calling for enactment of the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility, known as the SAVE America Act, which would require proof of citizenship to register to vote and photo identification to cast a ballot.

The Democratic amendment would strike the Republican resolution’s preamble and replace it with language detailing historical failures attributed to socialist and communist regimes, including the Soviet Union, China under Mao Zedong, and Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge.

“I keep hearing people like Hakeem Jeffries and others in Congress saying that they oppose the DSA,” Crank told Fox News Digital in an Aug. 28 interview. “I want to see if they’re willing to vote for a resolution that would oppose them.”

Crank’s office said the resolution comes as DSA-affiliated candidates have competed in more than 100 elections across at least half of the states since the November 2025 election of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist.

Anand Shah, a Prospect Park councilman, has pleaded guilty to racketeering and money laundering for his role in an illegal gambling operation linked to the Lucchese crime family, forcing his resignation and a lifetime ban from holding public office in New Jersey.

Shah’s downfall came after prosecutors revealed he ran an illegal gambling ring across several New Jersey counties, pocketing nearly $1 million over six years. The operation, which spanned Morris, Passaic, and Bergen counties from 2017 to 2023, relied on backroom poker games and a network of subagents, with Shah collecting over $900,000 in “rakes”, the cut taken from each game.

Authorities said Shah didn’t just break the law for personal gain. He used a significant portion of the proceeds to fund his own political campaign, even forgiving gamblers’ debts in exchange for campaign contributions. As a result, Shah pleaded guilty to racketeering, money laundering, and official misconduct, resigned his council seat on Friday, and is now permanently barred from ever holding public office in the state.

The charges against Shah came as part of a sweeping crackdown on illegal gambling, one that officials say exposed deep ties between local politicians and organized crime.

According to the New York Post’s reporting, the state’s investigation uncovered $4.79 million in suspected criminal proceeds, led to charges against 42 people, and resulted in 38 guilty pleas, with only two defendants still facing charges.

Rep. James Clyburn publicly endorsed adding four new seats to the Supreme Court for a total of thirteen, arguing on national television that Congress must take “significant actions” to address what he described as a reversal of the nation’s constitutional progress, an idea critics warn could undermine the Court’s independence.

On NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Rep. James Clyburn made his position clear: he wants Congress to expand the Supreme Court from its current nine justices to thirteen. Asked directly by host Kristen Welker whether he supported adding four seats, Clyburn responded, “Yes, I do.”

He called for what he described as “significant actions taken by the Congress” and insisted that “thirteen is a pretty good number. A baker’s dozen would be a good number to have on the court.” Clyburn added that he hoped (he hoped?) the new justices would “follow the constitutional underpinnings of this great nation of ours.”

Calls to expand the Supreme Court have become a rallying cry in some progressive circles frustrated with a conservative majority. But Clyburn’s remarks on a national platform escalate the conversation, placing a senior Democratic leader in direct support of a policy long viewed as a partisan power grab.

While Clyburn argued that new justices would “follow the constitutional underpinnings of this great nation,” critics have long warned that court-packing risks turning the judiciary into a tool of the party in power, eroding the very independence the Founders designed. The Supreme Court’s legitimacy depends on its ability to stand above partisan cycles and enforce the Constitution even when doing so is unpopular in Washington.

Expanding the Court would set a precedent difficult to reverse. If Congress can add seats to tilt the balance, nothing prevents future majorities from doing the same. The end result? A judiciary that follows the political winds, not the law.

They splash it across campaign banners. They rehearse it in stump speeches. They flood social media with earnest promises to “listen to all sides” and “bring people together.” It’s a pitch designed for moderate voters who are genuinely exhausted by partisan trench warfare – and Democrats know it.

But here’s what decades of watching these campaigns have taught conservative Americans: the invitation always comes with conditions. Democrats will preach inclusion, tolerance, and open dialogue until someone who actually disagrees with them walks through the door. Then the hospitality evaporates in about three seconds flat.

It just happened again in rural Wisconsin, and honestly, the details are almost too perfect.

Wisconsin Democrat congressional candidate Rebecca Cooke’s post-primary effort to present herself as a candidate willing to engage voters across the political spectrum is facing scrutiny after a Trump supporter was denied entry to an event her campaign had promoted as open to the public.

On primary night, Cooke declared, “If I see someone with a MAGA hat on, I’m shaking their hand.” Days later, her campaign launched a two-day “Coming Together Tour,” advertising the events as “free and open to the public” and saying, “all are welcome.”

A Stevens Point woman took Cooke at her word. She showed up to the “Coming Together Tour” wearing a MAGA hat with an American flag draped over her shoulders. She was denied entry at the door.

Goldman’s obnoxious showboating hatred of Trump and championing of neo-socialist agendas offered no defense against the Jacobins’ antisemitism and hatred of Israel.

A number of Jewish Democrat candidates, like wannabe California congressman Scott Wiener, are backing off from Israel and now join the “genocide!” mob. Wiener hopes that the throng will reward his new anti-Israel position by overlooking the now inconvenient fact that to the antisemitic Democrat base he is still Jewish.

Fetterman breaks with his party on AI, warns U.S. retreat hands China the advantage

Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman sided with President Trump on aggressive AI development over the weekend, rejecting calls from fellow Democrats to slow down, and warning that every delay benefits Beijing.

Fetterman posted on X on Saturday, sharing a Bloomberg analysis that examined the narrowing U.S. lead over China in artificial intelligence and the faster pace at which Chinese companies are deploying advanced models. His message was blunt: stop panicking about data centers and start competing. Fox News Digital reported that the Democrat dismissed what he called "AI doomsdaying" and accused critics of playing into China's hands.

The senator framed the stakes in national-security terms:

"AI supremacy and energy dominance underpins our national security. China continues to fuel and benefit from our overreaction. I reject the political pandering and hyperbole over data centers or AI doomsdaying."

That puts Fetterman squarely on the same side as the White House, and miles from the progressive wing of his own party, which wants to freeze data center construction altogether. Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez want a moratorium; Fetterman calls it "China First"

The split inside the Democratic caucus is not new, but it is widening. On March 25, Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez stood at the U.S. Capitol to announce the Artificial Intelligence Data Center Moratorium Act, a proposal to halt new facility construction across the country. Fetterman responded by labeling the moratorium push "China First", a deliberate inversion of the progressive framing.

Earlier this month, when reports surfaced that Sanders was eyeing a broader pause on AI development itself, Fetterman fired back again on X:

"America must lead in the development of AI, otherwise we live under China's rules. That must not happen."

Now a Florida Senate candidate is telling Black voters that ICE agents will shoot them in the streets.

Tom Homan had four words for Democrat Angie Nixon that ended the conversation.

Angie Nixon – the Democratic Socialist who just shocked Florida by winning the Senate primary – went on a podcast and told listeners that ICE agents cannot tell the difference between black Americans and illegal immigrants from Jamaica or Nigeria.

Then she went further. "They are going to racially profile us," Nixon said, "and they are going to escalate things, and they are going to shoot and kill us." Not a policy critique. Not a call for reform.

A direct claim that federal immigration agents are hunting black Americans.

Homan's response was four words: "That's a ridiculous statement."

Then he explained exactly why. "We don't racially profile. Everybody we talk to, we have reasonable suspicion of aliens to talk to them and to arrest them we need probable cause. That's what the law says. And that's what we do."

He wasn't finished.

"We don't arrest people based on the color of their skin,” he said. “I'm actually an equal opportunity deporter. I deported people to 180 countries last year. I don't care if you're from Asia, you're from Europe, or you're from other countries. If you're in the country illegally, you will be deported, regardless of the color of your skin."

Clinton's milestone arrives at a moment when the Democratic Party he helped build looks almost nothing like the one he led. The centrist, business-friendly "New Democrat" brand that carried him to two terms has given way to an activist base that treats his legacy with ambivalence at best.

Clinton himself has acknowledged the tension. He once shrugged off the socialist surge in New York and insisted Democrats were "in good shape", a characterization that even sympathetic observers found generous given the party's internal fractures.

Those fractures have only widened. Figures from media commentators to Senate candidates have openly questioned whether the party's leftward drift has become a structural problem. Bill Maher declared Democrats were being "colonized" by socialists, and candidates in competitive races have echoed progressive rhetoric that would have been unrecognizable in the Clinton era.

Clinton's birthday leaves just one living current or former president under 80: Barack Obama, who turned 65 earlier in August. The other four, Joe Biden at 83, President Donald Trump and George W. Bush both at 80, have all crossed the threshold within weeks of one another, USA TODAY reported.

Jimmy Carter, who died in late 2024, lived to 100 years and 89 days, the longest-lived president in American history. George H.W. Bush came second at 94 years and 171 days. Trump Mocks Alex Vindman After Florida Primary Loss: ‘How cool is that???’

Alex Vindman’s political comeback attempt ended with a major defeat Tuesday night. The retired lieutenant colonel and former National Security Council official lost the Democratic primary for a U.S. Senate seat in Florida.

Progressive state Rep. Angie Nixon pulled off the upset. Nixon is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America and entered the race with far less money and much less support from the party establishment.

Vindman became a national political figure during the 2019 impeachment fight over President Trump’s phone call with Ukraine. He later built his Senate campaign around his anti-Trump profile and attracted significant support from Democratic donors.

But the money did not translate into votes. Vindman raised more than $16 million, while Nixon brought in under $1 million, according to the source report. Despite that enormous fundraising advantage, Vindman was defeated by the candidate many Democrats had not expected to win.

President Trump quickly reacted to the result and appeared to enjoy the outcome. After the loss, he took a victory lap over the former impeachment witness.

Trump’s reaction was brief and blunt: “How cool is that???”

On August 18, 2026 in the Florida Democratic U.S. Senate primary, state Representative Angie Nixon defeated retired Lieutenant Colonel Alex Vindman by winning approximately 56% to 44% of the vote, securing a margin of victory of about 12 percentage points.

Socialism had support in that Democrat primary race which is anything but cool."  We can only hope that her win was an anomaly (and people were enticed by free stuff) and that Ashley Moody wins state-wide in the General.

Matthews did not hold back on the broadcast. He framed the DSA's public platform as a gift to every non-socialist Democrat willing to use it, telling the "Morning Joe" audience:

"The DSA has done a favor to non-DSA Democrats, to regular Democrats who are regular members of the party. They've listed what they believe in. Their chair made that clear."

When figures like Matthews and Maher, both longtime fixtures of the center-left media establishment, start warning their own side that the socialist label is politically toxic, the party has a problem that goes beyond messaging.

Schumer backs down on shutdown threat, giving Senate Republicans a political win

Senate Democrats abandoned months of brinkmanship and backed a bipartisan spending bill to keep the government open, a retreat that Senate Majority Leader John Thune says was driven by cold electoral math ahead of the midterm elections.

The Senate advanced a continuing resolution on Saturday to avert yet another government shutdown, with Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and his caucus supporting the measure after weeks of resistance. The CR would fund federal agencies at current levels through December 11, pushing the next budget fight past Election Night and into a lame-duck session of Congress.

CR stands for a continuing resolution. It is a temporary emergency spending bill that funds federal government operations and prevents a government shutdown when regular annual appropriations bills have not been passed by the October 1 start of the fiscal year.

Thune told Fox News Digital that Democrats made a political calculation, not a principled one. He said the minority party did not want to spend the next three months fending off Republican attacks over a shutdown they could have prevented.

"I think they didn't want to spend the next, well... three months defending attacks from Republicans about wanting to shut the government down."

Thune went further, describing his Democratic colleagues as operators who live and die by polling data.

California Democrats buck Newsom and Becerra with vote to endorse billionaire wealth tax

California's Democratic Party resolutions committee voted to recommend endorsing a one-time 5% tax on the state's roughly 200 billionaires, defying both outgoing Gov. Gavin Newsom and gubernatorial nominee Xavier Becerra, who oppose the measure.

The committee's Saturday vote puts Proposition 40, formally titled the California 2026 Billionaire Tax Act, one step closer to an official party endorsement ahead of the November 3 ballot.

But the recommendation is not final. Full endorsement requires at least 60% of delegates to approve it during Sunday's general session, where delegates could also vote to take no position, a move that needs only a simple majority, or pull the recommendation for a separate floor debate.

Either way, the committee's action exposes a sharp rift inside California's ruling party over how far Sacramento should go in taxing its wealthiest residents, and whether doing so would protect state programs or simply chase money across state lines.
