—Baltimore County Animal Services (BCAS) is marking a milestone anniversary this weekend

It is celebrating 10 years of operations at its Baldwin facility. To commemorate a decade of growth and animal advocacy, the organization will host a 10-hour Adopt-a-Thon and Open House on Saturday, Jan. 10.

The event will run from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the shelter located at 13800 Manor Road. The day is designed to offer the community a closer look at the facility’s operations while finding permanent homes for pets currently in the county’s care.

To encourage adoptions, BCAS is waiving all adoption fees for the duration of the event. Furthermore, every person who adopts a new pet will receive a PetSmart gift card to help with initial supplies.

The open house will feature several interactive and service-oriented highlights.

Why is this interesting to Lake Worthians?

Because Dr. Rene Varela, MS, VMD, MPH, is its Bureau Director and the former mayor of Lake Worth Beach.

Firefighters rushed into a Lake Worth home Friday morning, rescuing two dogs and a cat from a kitchen fire as smoke and flames spread.

The Palm Beach County Fire Rescue says they were called to a house fire Friday morning on Colony View Drive in Lake Worth Beach.

Firefighters rushed into the kitchen, put out the fire, and searched the entire house, where they found two dogs and a cat and brought them to safety.

This is away from the norm on this blog but I found it interesting in that one plucky pig has delivered the ultimate act of revenge, killing a butcher with the cleaver that was about to be used on him.

I'm not a vegan per se but eat very little meat. There is always the thought of raising and killing animals for food that is distasteful to me.

This reminds me of the couple who recently bid on a Hog at the South Florida Fair to rescue it, saving it from the slaughterhouse and then discovered the animal would be killed anyway and they had spent $4,700 on its meat.

Meg and Eric Weinberger, who run the Rescue Life Sanctuary in Palm Beach Gardens, insist officials from the South Florida Fair gave no notification that they were bidding in a “terminal” auction of livestock raised solely for processing.

Stories such as this are depressing.

Three cats were recently dropped off at our substation in the middle of the night. They are all very sweet. They appear to have been well cared for and are litter box trained, indoor cats. We cannot keep them and have not been able to find people to adopt them within our agency. Can you post them on your sites? We’d love to find homes for them and avoid sending them to shelters. President Donald Trump lashed out at our lax immigration laws, going so far as to call some of the violent criminals who were trying to cross our border — especially members of the MS-13 gang — animals.

A low-life dumped a pregnant dog on the side of the road

The driver sped away and the little dog was panic stricken. She kept crossing Lake Osborne Drive and running around the neighborhood, confused and alone.

It was a fun morning yesterday. At any given time, there were at least 4-5 PBSO vehicles as well as Animal Rescue and Control at the scene adjacent to where I live. We were told not to approach the poor, unfortunate animal that ran around for two hours determined not to be caught but in the end, she hid under a bush, tired and scared.

To the piece of trash who dumped her from his car, you are one miserable person--notice I did not say "human being." You are certainly one with zero humanity and I would think that the rest of your life will be tricky for you..

Today at the Beach

I used to see many squirrels at John Prince Park but they disappeared after hurricane Wilma in 2005. I spotted several this morning at the Lake Worth beach. One was even eating a peanut.

Pythons in our Everglades National Park

An invasive species in the Everglades since the late 1980's but not recognized as a reproducing population until year 2000.

4,000 pounds of dead snakes were captured and killed in the recent python hunt. Can you even imagine that they can devour an alligator! Probably some exotic snake collectors released them into our Everglades.

These were the most loving and well behaved dogs I have ever seen. The owner would tell them to sit; they would sit. Lay down--no problem. Not sure what breed they are...Labradoodles?

No sunset tonight but one of the little rabbits came out of hiding. I left a Snapper treat for him in the brush that consists of bananas and cranberries...like a Granola for rabbits. Hope he finds it.

Cat Eyes

These "purrty" balls of "fur" live on S. Lakeside Drive. My-Kel, along with 19 year old Tuxedo and Lily Monet, the masters of  Barbara Jean's home. Her cats know she is the "cat's meow." They are treated royally, loved like family and Barbara Jean even cooks special foods for them.

Greatest Show on Earth bites the dust

Ringling Brothers, around since 1884, comes to an end. Another great corporation bites the dust thanks to increasing costs and liberal animal activist groups.

I've been attending this circus ever since I was a kid. My favorite act was the high trapeze and getting to see the elephants was a joy. It wasn't that long ago when the South Florida Fair had the Ringling Brothers Circus as a main act. And then that stopped.
