Senate Confirms Trump Pick for CDC Director

Dr. Erica Schwartz will become the top official at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Senate on Aug. 5 confirmed President Donald Trump’s latest nominee for director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC, a public health agency that aims to protect Americans from diseases, has about 12,000 employees.

Fifty-one senators voted to confirm Dr. Erica Schwartz to the position, compared to 43 who voted no.

All the yes votes came from Republicans apart from Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.). All the no votes came from Democrats or Independents who caucus with Democrats. Six senators, including Sens. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) and Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), missed the vote.

Schwartz will become the second person Trump has nominated to serve as director of the CDC.

Former White House COVID Task Force Coordinator Dr. Deborah Birx criticized pandemic-era restrictions after Dr. Anthony Fauci repeatedly declined to answer questions at a Senate hearing.

Fauci became one of the most recognizable public officials during the pandemic. He appeared regularly on television and helped shape the public messaging surrounding masks, vaccines, closures, and other restrictions. His refusal to answer questions at the hearing drew renewed criticism from opponents of those policies.

Birx, who worked alongside Fauci on the White House task force, addressed the hearing during an appearance on Newsmax. She argued that politics played a major role in how some states responded to the pandemic.

“There were solutions, but it became very political, and we all have to be aware, because it was a presidential election year,” Birx said.
She continued, “It was really important for blue states to show that they were taking this very seriously, and they overclosed. And we just have to be honest that that happened!”

Birx’s comments drew attention because she was also a prominent advocate for strict precautions during the pandemic.

Critics have pointed to her support for measures such as goggles and multiple masks. She also faced backlash after traveling to visit family during Thanksgiving  🦃 while encouraging Americans to avoid visiting their own relatives.

Trump Picks Kennedy Deputy as Acting CDC Director

The Trump administration has picked Deputy Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Jim O’Neill to serve as acting director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a day after the administration fired current Director Susan Monarez, officials told The Hill.

Monarez is contesting her firing, though the White House has confirmed her ouster following a statement on Wednesday from HHS.

O’Neill is a Silicon Valley investor and former CEO of the Thiel Foundation, funded by Trump donor Peter Thiel. He previously served as principal associate deputy secretary at HHS during the George W. Bush administration.

He was sworn in as deputy secretary in June.

Entire CDC FOIA Office Fired as Health Agency Moves to Centralize Structure

A health official said all the Freedom of Information Act offices were previously operating in an isolated fashion.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s entire Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) office was fired as part of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) reorganization, a health official confirmed on April 2.

Some FOIA employees working in other HHS divisions, including the National Institutes of Health, were also among those being laid off by HHS. The terminations are part of HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s restructuring plan, aimed at streamlining operations, an HHS official told The Epoch Times.

The various FOIA offices did not communicate with each other, nor did they report to their parent agency, HHS, the official said. Instead, the offices “all operated in their own silo.”

Trump's "border czar" claims Mexican cartels killed a quarter-million Americans with fentanyl

President-elect Donald Trump has said halting fentanyl trafficking across the southern border is a top priority for his administration, vowing to impose 25% tariffs on all imports from Mexico until the flow of "drugs, particularly fentanyl, and illegal immigrants" into the United States is stopped to his liking.

Trump has claimed fentanyl overdoses kill 300,000 people annually, a toll he said is "probably much more," while incoming "border czar" Tom Homan alleged in a Fox News interview this week that Mexican cartels have "killed a quarter of a million Americans with fentanyl."

Synthetic opioids such as fentanyl have become the leading cause of overdose deaths since 2016, devastating communities across the U.S. and causing a major public health challenge, according to the National Institutes of Health. Mexican cartels are the main source of finished fentanyl in the U.S., officials say.

According to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 334,000 people in the U.S. died from drug overdoses involving synthetic opioids, such as fentanyl, over a nearly 10-year period from 2013 to 2022. As of July, the CDC's latest provisional data recorded over 73,000 fentanyl overdose deaths in 2023.

More than 86% of people convicted of fentanyl trafficking during the 2023 fiscal year were American citizens, according to the U.S. Sentencing Commission. Researchers say drug trafficking organizations hire U.S. citizens because they are subject to less scrutiny.

A new report, however, is claiming that Pfizer and Moderna did exactly that. If the report is accurate, bad batches of the vaccine were being knowingly distributed.

“The statistics show that only 4 to 5% of the Covid-19 vaccine batches produced by Pfizer and Moderna were responsible for each and every death recorded as an adverse reaction to the injections.

“But what’s possibly more worrisome is that while other ‘benign’ lots were sent to many different sites around the country, the small percentage of ‘deadly’ lots were dispersed extensively.”

The report added, “According to this data alone, the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine has resulted in 195 times as many hospitalizations, 189 times as many fatalities, and 106 times as many adverse effects as all other influenza vaccines combined.”

This will be a significant blemish on the early days of Joe Biden’s presidency, as if he needs more.
