State Department blocks Mamdani official's planned sit-down with Iran's UN ambassador
The Trump administration shut down a planned meeting between a senior New York City official and Iran's ambassador to the United Nations, the second time in recent weeks federal authorities have had to intervene over the Mamdani administration's freelance contacts with foreign leaders.Commissioner Ana MarĂa Archila, who leads Mayor Zohran Mamdani's Office of International Affairs, had scheduled a sit-down with Amir-Saeid Iravani, Iran's permanent representative to the UN, Fox News Digital reported. Once the State Department learned of the plan, the meeting was called off. Federal officials then met with Mamdani administration staff to spell out what conduct is and isn't acceptable.
Mamdani, New York City's newly elected mayor, told reporters at a Friday press conference that he had no idea the meeting was in the works until a journalist asked about it.
"That meeting did not take place, it will not take place and I did not know about it until there was a press inquiry regarding it."When pressed on whether he would have supported such a meeting, Mamdani cut the exchange short: "I've said that that meeting will not be taking place. Thank you all very much."
