Judge Boasberg blocks Trump visa restrictions on foreign censorship actors in First Amendment dispute

Chief U.S. District Judge James Boasberg has temporarily halted the Trump administration's policy of restricting visas for foreign nationals tied to the suppression of American free speech, a move conservatives say shields the very actors who helped silence them.

Boasberg, an Obama appointee who has clashed repeatedly with the Trump White House, issued a stay blocking the State Department from enforcing its policy against individuals connected to organizations like the Global Disinformation Index.

The GDI drew bipartisan scrutiny after it produced what critics called blacklists of conservative news websites, while receiving federal funding during the Biden era.

Fox News Digital reported that the judge found the administration may be engaging in viewpoint discrimination that violates the First Amendment.

Boasberg's role in this case is difficult to separate from his broader record. President Obama nominated him to the federal bench in 2010, and Fox News has described him as "a major judicial antagonist across President Donald Trump's two administrations." His rulings have repeatedly put him at odds with the current White House on immigration, national security, and executive authority.
