A federal judge struck down New York's attempt to ban federal agents from wearing face coverings and require them to display visible identification, the latest in a string of court losses for blue-state leaders trying to hamstring immigration enforcement.

U.S. District Judge Mae D'Agostino, sitting in the Northern District of New York, ruled Monday that the state measures likely violate the supremacy clause of the Constitution, the provision that bars state governments from regulating how federal law enforcement operates. The federal government, D'Agostino found, had shown a strong likelihood of success on that central legal question.

Gov. Kathy Hochul signed the face-covering ban and identification requirement into law in May as part of the state budget. The provisions took effect in June. They lasted roughly two months before a federal court pulled the plug. [Marissa George, RealTalk digest]
