J Street is really buzzing

Lake Worth is buzzing with artists and J Street is the place to go for art, coffee and fun. Now we have a new store that recently opened at 16 S. J Street--Urquijo Photo Image. Don't bother asking me how to pronounce it but the owner/photographer says he is into multi-venue photography.

When I told him that I love to photograph sunsets he then told me that he does everything--I guess that means sunsets too.

So if you need a photographer for a wedding or an upcoming event or project, call Christiun at 954-706-6650.

Commissioner Ryan Maier

Lake Worth Merchants Supporting Atlanta Braves in John Prince Park

Comment Up

There is Callaros, Brogues, Paws on the Avenue, Studio 205 and Dave's Last Resort all with Atlanta Braves signs in their windows. Owners of these establishments are all friends of Vice Mayor Maxwell.  Is that just a coincidence?

By displaying a Braves sign, are these merchants suggesting that 1) they don't care about the residential neighborhood adjacent to John Prince Park, 2) they don't care about bulldozing 100 acres of a county park for the possibility and unproven economic impact it might (but probably won't) have on their bottom line and 3) they don't care about the destruction of our wildlife and animal habitats there? What do you think?

Hudson Holdings Blitzing Store Fronts

Comment Up

These poor store owners at the Lake Worth Casino didn't know what hit them when a guy came around distributing Hudson Holdings window posters. One store manager said that the young man said he was with the City of Lake Worth so he put it in his window wanting to be compatible. Another store had no clue what it meant. Little did they know the were being asked to possibly bite off their nose in spite of their face. Other flyers have been distributed in the downtown as Hudson is promoting its asset grab.

Bicycle rentals at Lake Worth Beach

Comment Up

Family Bicycles, a company in Lake Worth for 17 years whose main store is located at 127 South Dixie, is "leasing" a portion of space in front of the casino for $1,500 for eight weeks. The hours of operation are from 8am to 4pm. The city is calling it a license agreement (the mayor has to sign all leases/contracts and this is signed by the city manager because they are calling it a license agreement) and it commenced on May 6. No reason to bother the mayor and the commission on something so mundane, right?

The legal relationship between the property owner-landlord and a tenant established by a lease is entirely distinct from the legal relationship established by a license between the property owner-licensor and a licensee. Under a   bona fide license agreement, the tenant-licensee owns no estate in the premises and has no right to possession. A license agreement is the permission to carry out a particular activity, given by the appropriate authority, in this case, the authority of the city manager.

This is a pilot program. It's too bad it didn't start during the Season. The manager, Albert DeGoias, says that he will be there on weekends. Rentals start at $10 on a major credit card.

The "surprise"

The "before" photo--what is it?

A bad "selfie" but you can get the picture. Thought of our old friend, Donna Ross with this hat.

Bought this at the Sand Sculpting event this past Saturday at our glorious Lake Worth beach.

Yesterday at the Lake Worth beach

Comment Up

Gorgeous day--the ocean was calm; the parking lot was packed--stopped at Benny's first and there was a 40 minute wait at 1:30. Went down to Mulligans and the lunch was fantastic. Kilwin's was very busy selling ice cream cones and lucious candy.  Mamma Mia's was crowded. Ran into friends and one was celebrating her birthday. BarbaraJean modeled a hat at Lake Worth Tee Shop.

Sidewalk Cafe Permit - Lake Worth

Comment Up

It is unlawful for any person to conduct, solicit or attempt to solicit business or business, or exhibit for sale, offer for sale, deliver, or sell any service, goods, ware and/or merchandise from, in, and/or on any vehicular right of way, pedestrian right of way, public parking lot, or other public property in the city with some exceptions.

The downtown restaurants and those using the sidewalk say they will only use that area that is part of their lease or what they own that is not city property or property owned by FDOT and therefore don't need to get a new license.

Per William Waters, "The pavers in question, for the most part, are on Florida Department of Transportation Right of Way.  As such the pavers are theirs (FDOT); however, the pavers do extend onto private property in many cases.  As  long as those businesses can document that their activities are taking place only on private property, they indeed do not need a sidewalk café permit.  From the complaints that we have heard and received, activities are taking place on public right of way on the weekends and later in the evening.  If the businesses undertake activities on the right of way without an appropriate permit, they will be cited."

Ad Valorem Taxes on City owned beach property

Comment Up

Aside from the tremendous amount they pay per square foot, the merchants at the beach are paying a lot of taxes on our city owned property at the Lake Worth beach. They have been charged more for expenses now that the city knows the actual costs to operate the building. It took the city a year to learn the true costs. The percentage of cost increases have not been consistent across the board with some merchants paying much higher per sq. ft. than others.

They have all been billed for their share of ad valorem taxes by the city and the amounts below are due by April 1, 2014.

Benny's: $26,330.51
