Nomination of former West Palm Beach city commissioner Shanon Materio to Lake Worth Beach CRA is rejected

Yes, Shanon--I agree with you--it was "personal." Residents in this city saw you in action back when you started as a member of the CRA on 1-23-2006 during your four year term that expired on 8-21-2209 that was not renewed.

Mrs. Materio has applied once again to "serve" on the Lake Worth CRA. Could it be that she wants the Dixie Corridor developed to help her business?

Commissioner Sarah Malega, who nominated Materio, chastised her colleagues on the dais for rejecting Materio while they "rubber-stamped two other recent nominees to the CRA." Actually, she was "pissed" when her nominee was voted down on a 3/2 vote and walked out of the room, calling for a 5  minute break. Commissioner Malega said several times that she did "her due diligence" regarding Materio. But Sarah moved to Lake Worth three years after Shanon left the CRA and did not know the feelings of many in the community. With all that D&D she says she did, did she ask any residents, you know, those she serves?

In the case of Shanon Materio, the majority on the present dais voted her appointment down. That is democracy, no? There were reasons, whether revealed or not, as our commissioners want to work in a positive vein which is politically smart.

against political operative Rick Asnani of Cornerstone Solutions Inc. whose campaign mailer she alleged was untrue.

We all remember Shanon Materio who had a business on Dixie Highway in Lake Worth (Beach) for years and was a member of our CRA. She became a council member in West Palm Beach for 5 years and was defeated by Christina Lambert in 2018. This case has been going on for some time.

Asnani did pull some dirty tricks and used a photograph with her and Donald Trump against her in this dominantly Democrat liberal city. But politics is dirty. As our former mayor Rene Varela said years ago, "Politics is a blood sport." Our present mayor just found that out.

Shanon Materio started her political career right here in Lake Worth as a member of the CRA. So, naturally, we like to follow her and what she is up to.

A political newcomer, Christina Lambert, beat her out of her West Palm Beach commission seat by 183 votes.

Now she's suing "political consultant, Rick Asnani, alleging Monday that an untruthful campaign mailer he and associated companies distributed in February defamed her and contributed to her narrow loss."

No comparison between Materio, Lambert campaigns

I strongly disagree with the two implied conclusions in Editorial Page Editor Rick Christie’s recent “Opinion Zone” blog post and column, “Christie: Follow the money in heated West Palm Beach commission race.”

First, I completely disagree that there is a comparison to be made between the alleged illegal activity of political consultant Rick Asnani and his Cornerstone employees, and the frivolous-in-nature complaints against my campaign, in which I mistakenly accepted a $50 contribution, which I discovered and self-disclosed; and a second complaint in which I supposedly sent out a Christmas card without the proper campaign disclosure.

All contributors and the amount of their contributions to the Materio Campaign, as well as any political committees acting in support of Shanon Materio, are fully disclosed, public information, and properly filed.

This is absolutely not true for the entities formed to support the Christina Lambert Campaign.

The three entities in particular are not political committees regulated by the state of Florida and have been discovered to be nothing more than shell companies formed to hide who the contributors are and even worse, how much each contributor gave.

I am disappointed, although not surprised, that Commissioner Lambert has not responded to my request that she join me in demanding Asnani and Cornerstone reveal to the public who these shadow contributors really are.

I am even more disappointed, that The Post hasn’t seized on either the illegal activity aspect, or the lack of transparency and what it means in terms of the First Amendment.

The Post decries even the slightest perception of a governmental body’s lack of responsiveness to a public records request.

But when it comes to hundreds of thousands of dollars raised and spent with the specific purpose of hiding the money, you instead compare it to a $50 campaign violation.

If you recall, in January, Materio, acting as a member of the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), an organization for which the mayor of Lake Worth is a member, voted yes in support of the road extension in direct opposition to a West Palm Beach resolution opposing the road.

"The item in question was the extension of State Road 7 between the Ibis Golf and Country Club and Grassy Waters Preserve. That’s a 4.2-mile project that the commission, including Materio, has spent years and millions of dollars opposing, on the grounds that road runoff would pollute the wetlands, West Palm’s main water supply." Following her vote in support of State Road 7, Materio was removed from the MPO by West Palm Beach on a 3/1 vote for opposing their wishes. This had to do with threatening the water quality for West Palm Beach, Palm Beach and South Palm Beach residents.

BriefingWire.com, 1/30/2018 - West Palm Beach, Fl -- Environmental and conservation leaders from the West Palm Beach community were stunned to hear of City Commissioner Shanon Materio’s vote in support of a controversial road development that would extend State Road 7, threatening the water quality for West Palm Beach, Palm Beach and South Palm Beach residents.

Materio was the only sitting member of the West Palm Beach City Commission to cast a vote in support of the project. The extension and expansion of State Road 7 is expected to cost nearly $80 million. Materio’s vote in support of the taxpayer-funded project would increase traffic along an environmentally sensitive area and could lead to more road congestion and growth.

The extension of the road would impact more than 219 acres of conservation land that is considered part of the Florida Everglades and serves as the primary source of drinking water for more than 130,000 residents. Additionally, the land serves as a habitat for wildlife, such as bald eagles, roseate spoonbills, alligators and other species.

Materio, acting as a member of the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), voted yes in support of the road extension in direct opposition to a West Palm Beach resolution opposing the road. Following her vote in support of State Road 7, Materio was removed from the MPO for opposing West Palm Beach.

The City of West Palm Beach has recently received a favorable ruling in the fight to oppose the expansion of State Road 7. In a statement on January 18, 2018, the City stated, “The City of West Palm Beach has achieved a favorable legal outcome in its effort to protect the environmental quality of Grassy Waters Preserve, a 23-square mile remnant of the Everglades.”

Over-reaching developers nearly grabbed waterfront property for a 25 story high rise

A proposed 25 story office tower went down in flames last night when the West Palm Beach city commissioners voted 3/2 to defeat the project.

West Palm Beach wanted to create an overlay district to encourage development of high rises along Okeechobee Boulevard. Related Group wanted the waterfront at Okeechobee and Flagler for their One Flagler proposal. That property is zoned  no higher than five stories.

When reading the article this morning it reminded me of what Lake Worth Commissioners did when they changed the zoning and the land use east of Federal to accommodate the owners of The Gulfstream Hotel. They created a Hotel District and allowed six stories to be developed and told the voters literally to "go to hell" who voted in a low-rise downtown Lake Worth of no more than four stories

Lake Worth's Planning & Zoning department voted to change our comprehensive plan and the land-development regulations and gave their recommendations to their "develop at all costs" leaders, Maxwell, Triolo and Amoroso, on the Lake Worth commission. The only ones who spoke out against it were ordinary citizens who were totally ignored as well as former Commissioner Christopher McVoy. Citizens formed a political action committee, Respectful Planning PAC. They rallied the voters and won by Referendum on March 13, 2013, five months before the city changed the Land Development Regulations on August 6, 2013 on a vote from the dais.

I congratulate West Palm Beach Commissioner Shanon Materio for voting this down thus preserving the waterfront on Flagler from an obnoxiously high development and to honor their voters (something all elected officials should be doing) who told them in 1996 that they did not want high rises on the waterfront.

Wanting to do everything possible to protect their water supply, West Palm Beach has always been against the State Road 7 extension because they say it would harm the source of the city’s water supply — Grassy Waters Preserve, a 24-square-mile marsh that was part of the original Everglades.

Although it was a good fight but one that they could not win, West Palm Beach has spent over $2 million opposing this 4.2 mile project. But Commissioner Shanon Materio who is on the Metropolitan Planning Council just voted for it. She was then kicked off the MPO on a 3/1 vote by the West Palm Beach council.

The U.S. Army Corp of Engineers just issued its approval for the project.

West Palm Beach mayor and commissioners vote in big raises for themselves

The Palm Beach Post article began with "City Commissioners have approved raises for themselves and Mayor Jeri Muoio, their first increases since 2004."

West Palm Beach has a similar problem to Lake Worth's.  In West Palm beach, commissioners are getting the big raises while projects have gone idle because of lack of funds. In Lake Worth, staff is still waiting for its 4% raise after not having one in eight years as department heads have all been raised in spite of them telling us they have no money to even fix a pothole.

WPB Commissioner Shanon Materio and Paula Ryan voted the right way on this one.

Materio in Tallahassee

The start of the Florida Legislature session for the new year started yesterday and West Palm Beach Commissioner Shanon Materio is in Tallahassee to see if she can get money for her Chain of Lakes project on the south end of West Palm Beach adjacent to the Lake Worth line.

She is asking for $286,000 in state dollars that will link county waterways and believes that the plans that are underway could prove a boon for everything from fishing to eco-tourism and would yield higher property values.
