Plane crash at John Prince Park

Small plane that crashed in Lake Worth Beach was on test flight with new propeller, officials say

"Authorities have confirmed that a small plane that crashed last month in Lake Worth Beach was on a test flight after a new propeller had been installed.

Officials with the National Transportation Safety Board said that about a minute into the flight, the plane experienced a loss of engine power.

The pilot brought the plane down on a road near a park (John Prince Park) but clipped a car on the way down (on Lake Osborne Drive).

One person on board the plane and five people on the ground suffered minor injuries. [WPBF]

PBSO investigating Shooting Incident on Lake Osborne

'You can't do that!': Investigators looking at illegal wildlife shooting on Lake Osborne

Lynn Anderson did not know what to think when she saw a man in a boat on Lake Osborne aim a rifle toward her while she was in John Prince Park. When she saw the feathers of a Muscovy Duck fly in the air, she called 911.

"You can't do that," she yelled at the shooter at 7 p.m. on July 13. “The shooter and four others on the boat thought it was big joke. They were close enough to the park that we could talk to each other.”

According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, it is a misdemeanor to harm wildlife in a county park without the permission of the park director. The part of Lake Osborne where the incident occurred is part of the 726-acre John Prince Park, which is just west of the city of Lake Worth Beach.

Airplanes hover over their homes, seaplanes land on Lake Osborne and now a boater fires into the shores of the lake trying to kill wildlife. This is enough already say residents on Lake Osborne.

Deputy Parks director Paul Connell said he cannot remember anyone ever trying to kill wildlife in John Prince Park from the lake. He said park rangers are working with PBSO to investigate the incident, noting that the county ordinance prohibits killing wildlife in a county park without the permission of the park director.

The agency has also called on the state Department of Environmental Protection and the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to investigate.

PBPost article by Mike Diamond.

the maiming, capture and killing of our wildlife has escalated over the last six months. The Park, in conjunciton with PBSP, will be installing signs around Lake Osborne and will be passing flyers at the boat ramp warning people that this is not allowed.

Shelley Vana calls us "idiots" at today's Dog Park Groundbreaking

Comment Up

One Lake Worth commissioner, Christopher McVoy, (he wore one of our t-shirts) and one County commissioner, Shelley Vana, attended the ground-breaking ceremony this morning at the Mounds Circle. A small tent was set up with chairs for the public. Ms. Vana spoke as well as Diane Sauve, Director of the Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control. Many people were from the Parks and Recreation Department.

About a dozen members from our John Prince Park Preservation Facebook page and friends were there with t-shirts and signs. We were there in support of the dog park but also there to silently protest any corporation bulldozing any square inch of our park. The PBSO was not going to allow us in but eventually relented.

Shelly Vana, the people's representative, called us all "idiots." Shelley Vana told me that it was inappropriate that we were there. Then the conversation went from dogs to beach. She accused me of never thanking her for the beach. When I asked her what she was talking about she said that it was she that got the bond money for our beach. I then made a statement that it took us six years to get the money. (I mean think about this folks, we were paying on the recreation bond for years on our county taxes with NO results...it was our designated money). She then pointed her finger at me and told me, "That was your fault."

John Prince Park

Drew Martin running for Shelley Vana's seat on the Palm Beach County Commission.

Our right to free speech was first denied and then a commissioner now running for Property Appraiser called us idiots. Is that bizarre or what?

Quote of the Day - Vice Mayor Scott Maxwell

Comment Up

"There are folks out there that are concerned, but I think they are clearly in the minority," said Lake Worth City Commissioner Scott Maxwell. "I think it's premature for any of us to get excited about what the site will look like and the impacts. It's going to have to wait until we see the plan. The plan hasn't been unveiled yet."

~ Scott Maxwell

Katie Mcgiveron speaks to Boynton Beach City Commission

Comment Up

On Tuesday night, Katie Mcgiveron spoke before the Boynton Beach City Commission as they had a Resolution on their Consent Agenda (encouraged by Scott Maxwell to do so)  to approve of the Atlanta Braves coming into John Prince Park.  Following is her public commentary:

Mayor, Commissioners, my name is Katie Mcgiveron. Thank you for allowing me to speak this evening.

I was born at Bethesda Hospital a LONG time ago, grew up in Lantana, and my husband and I made the big move to Lake Worth after we were married. I am the president of my neighborhood association, ROLO, Residents of Lake Osborne. Again, thank you for pulling this item for discussion.

In the packets I sent to each one of you is a map of John Prince Park, a break down of the usable acreage in the park and a card to our Facebook page. I also included an article by Bloomberg News "The Braves Play Taxpayers better than they play Baseball."

To get to the proposed stadium site you must take either Lantana or 6th Avenue South. Right now the 6th Avenue South interchange is such a traffic clogged mess that FDOT has commissioned a study to see how the traffic problems in this area can be solved. The state does not do this kind of thing often or lightly.

John Prince Park is a public park that should never have even  been considered for something like this. Once our park is gone, it's gone. You can't just say "we'll put another park over there." There is NO MORE OVER THERE left in Palm Beach County.

But let's cut to the chase:  MONEY. Money is always the bottom line isn't it.? Your mission statement here in Boynton is as follows: "To create a sustainable community by providing exceptional municipal service in a financially responsible manner." IN A FINANCIALLY RESPONSIBLE MANNER!

Baseball stadiums are a bad deal for the communities that have to pay for them. Study after study after study is out there, by economist after economist after economist.

Go to the Facebook page John Prince Park Preservation that I gave to you, scroll down and read the articles. Do your research before you jump into a resolution like this. In closing, if I may be so bold, I have some homework for each of you. This weekend, go to John Prince Park and take some time to look around. Maybe even talk to some people using the park. Once this park is gone, it's gone.

Thank you.

Atlanta Braves new Spring Training facility location pushed back

Comment Up

Braves won’t have new spring training home in time for 2018

Remember when it seemed like the Braves were on the cusp of finding themselves a new home for spring training? Well, that timeline has been pushed back by a full year after the team announced that talks with both Palm Beach County and Sarasota County weren’t going fast enough in order to make this a possibility. So, it looks like they’ll be staying at Disney’s Wide World of Sports for at least another season.
"We’re now focusing on 2019," Braves vice chairman John Schuerholz said. "It’s moving slowly enough that we have to adjust, and our target for a new facility is 2019."
The Braves’ lease at Disney’s Wide World of Sports near Orlando, where the team has trained since 1998, expires after next spring. But recent talks with officials in Palm Beach County and Sarasota County haven’t progressed fast enough to keep the timetable on track for a 2018 move. So the Braves have had a "substantive conversation" with Disney officials, Schuerholz said, about the possibility of a one-year extension that would keep the team training there in 2018.

John Prince is OUR Central Park

John Prince is our Central Park

So you want to take over our lovely green space that is free to all to enjoy year-round and turn it into a place where only those who can afford an expensive ticket can go (“Baseball battle over John Prince Park,” April 11). Go for a few times a year to see a ball game. Have you really thought about it?

The Atlanta Braves can afford to go other places; they have options. How many green spaces are left open for the public? You want to take away the west fields that are filled with soccer teams on the weekends. A lot of young “want to be” soccer stars are out there.

Don’t say that people can go somewhere else to play. There is nowhere else; you built and paved over it, remember?

Those of us who live here understand how New Yorkers feel about Central Park. John Prince Park is our Florida version of the same.

Earth Day and John Prince Park

Comment Up
And what better piece of earth needing protection
than
John Prince Park

Today is Earth Day, a day designated for fostering appreciation of the earth's environment and awareness of the issues that threaten it.

We have a huge issue right here in our own back yard. The Palm Beach County Commission, along with Lake Worth commissioners Scott Maxwell, Pam Triolo and Andy Amoroso, all who want to give 100 acres of public land in one of Palm Beach County's most beautiful parks to a billion dollar baseball team for private enterprise.

If you have not yet done so, please go to John Prince Park Preservation Facebook page and become a supporter to save and preserve our park.
