Hawaiian Surfers

Laurence McNamara's grandson, Makai McNamara of the North Shore Surf Shop team is following in his father Liam's and uncle Garrett's footsteps. He is 21 and the 2nd generation of professional McNamara surfers. Garrett broke the world record in 2011 for largest wave ever surfed at Nazaré, Portugal

Rider Makai McNamara lines up a deep barrel at Sunset. He just scored a 10 at Big Pipe. The Banzai Pipeline, or simply "Pipeline" or "Pipe," is a surf reef break located in Hawaii, off Ehukai Beach Park in Pupukea on O'ahu's North Shore

Lake Worth Beach today

Comment Up
Today, there were two flags flying at our beach:  yellow (moderate surf and/or currents) and purple (Dangerous Marine Life).

The only ones in the surf today were those kite surfing.

Garrett McNamara in New York Times article

The New York times writes, "The area has a reputation as a dangerous spot for its turbulent gales, crushing surf and frequent accidents, though on a recent day the sea was flat as a reflecting pool. Normally, though, the waves crash on shore with a special power, and for years residents were not even sure they were safe to surf."

Surfing at the Cortes Bank

While most of us were busy doing last minute Christmas shopping, the 2nd son of the 2nd son of the 2nd son (Lake Worth's Laurence McNamara's description of his grandson) was riding a wave at the Cortes Bank, which continues to be one of big-wave surfing's most illusive, volatile, and dangerous venues located 100 miles off the San Diego, California coast. Landon, nephew of world famous surfer, Garrett McNamara, and son of famous surfer Liam McNamara, is believed to be the youngest surfer to paddle into the wave and surf it.

Go to Frame 15 and see the ride.

Garrett McNamara now in Guinness World Records for surfing the biggest wave

Comment Up
Wave grew to 78 feet

Back in November 2011 I blogged about Garrett McNamara, professional surfer and son of Laurence.

Since that time, he has just officially won the Billabong XXL Awards in two categories: Biggest Wave and Best Wipe Out. On top of that, he is now in the Guinness World Records for surfing the biggest wave in history, breaking the old official record by one foot.

Click on this to see the biggest wave in history if you missed it in November. This is awesome. Surfers who were there swear the wave was 90 feet, not 78 feet as claimed by Guinness.

Garrett McNamara Rides the Big One

Comment Up
Son of Laurence and Dee McNamara--

We here in Lake Worth think that we get big waves during a storm. We have no idea what "big" is.

Garrett McNamara has surfed what is considered to be the biggest wave ever. The Hawaiian big wave rider caught the huge monster in Praia do Norte, Nazaré Portugal.

90 foot high wave--as tall as the Lake Worth Towers
