Back in November 2011 I blogged about Garrett McNamara, professional surfer and son of Laurence.
Since that time, he has just officially won the Billabong XXL Awards in two categories: Biggest Wave and Best Wipe Out. On top of that, he is now in the Guinness World Records for surfing the biggest wave in history, breaking the old official record by one foot.
Click on this to see the biggest wave in history if you missed it in November. This is awesome. Surfers who were there swear the wave was 90 feet, not 78 feet as claimed by Guinness.

He didnt ride the crest of the wave. No record imo. If you dont ride the top, no record.
Please be sure to contact Guinness that they made a terrible mistake.
When were you hired by Guinness?
And, when did you ride a wave bigger than the ones in your bathtub?
Your opinion is of no consequence.
Was Guinness even there? How did they measure the top of the wave? A lazer? Sounds like a fish story of how big the fish was that got away. No actual proof.
Somehow waves are measured because you can get the height of waves every day for boating purposes. I am rather sure there is some scientific way of measuring them. Good question though. Looking it up on Wikipedia, I give up.

Last Friday, Garrett won the prize for the largest wave of the year and for the best (worst) wipeout of the year at the Billabong XXL Big Wave awards, an annual event in Anaheim Ca.
He won $15M for the biggest wave and $2M for the wipeout.
The Guinness people were there to judge the height of the wave for the top 5 entrants. It was obvious that his wave was significantly larger than the other entrants whose waves looked in the 35 to 55 foot range. They judged his at 78', breaking the old record of 77'.
On the day he caught the monster wave in Nazare, his fellow professional surfers had been riding into 60 foot waves and several of them said that Garrett's was at least 30 feet larger; virtually every media outlet was in awe of his feat and when looking at the wave in their broadcasts, all reported it as 90 feet. Google "90 foot wave".
The professionals who put together the Guinness book of World Records are independent judges who value their integrity and take their work seriously. Their book is so successful because its validity is world renowned.
Of course the anonymous blogger is entitled to his opinion, but I strongly differ, and am grateful that the entire world has recognized Garrett's spectacular achievement, and not the comment of a person apparently unfamiliar with professional big wave surfing.
Garrett won the World Championship of tow in surfing at Jaws in Maui in 2003. He and his Brazilian partner, Dr. Rodrigo Resende shared a $70K prize for Garrett's riding a 70 foot wave-$1K a foot, so this was not a fluke.
He has been the reigning World Champion since then. Jaws has not had large enough waves during the contest window dates over the past several years to hold a championship event.
Garrett's dedication and achievements speak for themselves and I thank all my friends and neighbors for their recognition and good wishes, and Garrett for making me as proud as a father can be.
Wow, a 78 foot wave! That sure makes The Lucerne seem small by comparison. I’m amazed at just how well read The Guinness Book of Records is. When John & I were in the book we must have autographed hundreds of them, mostly being read by kids traveling by plane. All we did to be mentioned in the book was to pass through the birth cannel and years later we were the world’s smallest twins. Garrett was out there doing something that most would consider life-threatening. But I’d bet if you asked him he would say he was living his dream. Congrats Garrett!
Greg Rice is in the Guiness Book of Records and comments from personal experience, therefore positively.Thank you Greg, you're a true succesful gentleman, therefore not in need of discrediting stellar achievements of others.
The sneak who discredits his betters, is an anonymous coward, can only be a product of inferior parents.
Only a loser, will discredit a stellar achievement, while his insignificant self, was not present , nor ever could match, or experienceOnly such base element would deride Garrett McNamara's succesful act of global significance.
The first person Garret called and thanked, was
his patrician Dad,(those who know that social level will confirm) when his World Championship was declared,
his Dad, Laurence, he reveres and loves, for being the special human being, with the highest moral standards,he knows, who could never do or has done a dishonorable act, result of his upper Class upbringing.
This is an unknown type of upbringing,to those who spend their lives digging into their dirty parental upbringing and trying to force it with lies, on proper people. Laurence
spent 5 years of his life teaching the poorest children in Oakland's gettho Life skills.
Garrett,
with a father as laurence Mcnamara, who places honor above all, you will continue to do great things.Your father is loved and respected by all the right people!
, with the highest moral standards,he knows, who could never do or has done a dishonorable act, result of his upper Class upbringing.
Goodness me. A relative of John Goodman. Dude, everybody has made mistakes. Some get caught, some dont.
CBS national news ran this story last night. Sensational
Dee defending and praising her husband is understandable as is Lawrence praising his son.
The divisiveness of phrases like "loved and respected by the right people" and "result of his upper class upbringing" are all to typical of the low level of civility in most Lake Worth discussion.
Didn't Lawrence use ACORN in some of his petition drives. Wasn't Lawrence responsible for some of the scare propaganda in the Greater Bay controversy. Isn't the McNamara-McCauley lawsuit about to cost Lake Worth millions in settlement costs? The hot dog park propaganda doesn't seem to have inured to the benefit of Lake Worth.
Let's see if the McNamara--Mulvehill--McVoy contingency is validated or repudiated at the polls in November because of these matters.
First of all, this blog is about Garrett McNamara, not his father and not Dee.
Laurence never used ACORN for any petitions.
Laurence was not responsible for any "scare tactics" in the Greater Bay deal. What he did was to discover that the GB lease was not for 20 years minus a day but for 40 years. Corrupt politicians were pushing for the takeover of our beach property. In fact, not one of them even read the contract. This went against our Charter Amendment.
As far as Old Bridge Park goes, Laurence and his PAC saved this city from corrupt politicians who wanted to sell off public land to a developer for the benefit of the developer. It saved this land as a park for Lake Woroth, something that the people continually say we do not have enough of in this city. The people spoke; they voted; they agreed with an overwhelmingly vote of 66% to protect our public lands. You should be thanking him instead of constantly criticizing him.
Laurence and Dee spent their own money with a few donations for 5 years to have a free celebration for the folks in this City by providing food and drink and music on July 4th. Instead of being so critical, again, you should be thanking them for their generosity.
As far as this election coming up, McNamara has nothing to do with it. Also, I doubt very seriously if either McVoy or Mulvehill will run again. Each needs to now make a living and think of themselves before anything else. It must be a real challenge for them, trying to do the right thing for people like you.
