House GOP leaders send lawmakers home early, sidestepping Hegseth impeachment vote

House Republican leaders scrapped Thursday's scheduled votes and sent members home ahead of the midterm elections, a move that conveniently shelves a resolution to impeach Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth until the lame duck session.

Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters the early exit had nothing to do with the eight-article impeachment resolution that Rep. Thomas Massie, a Kentucky Republican and vocal critic of the Trump White House, unveiled on Tuesday. Johnson called it "a publicity stunt by someone who wants attention" and predicted the resolution would be "immediately" rejected when the lame duck session begins November 9.

The cancellation caps a September in which Johnson had already wiped the last two weeks of scheduled session from the calendar. The House has now scrapped at least 63 voting days this Congress, according to Rep. Ralph Norman, a South Carolina Republican and Freedom Caucus member, nine of them this month alone

Greene, Massie, Kent and Carlson float third-party challenge amid GOP divide over Iran war

Former Republican Representatives Marjorie Taylor Greene and Thomas Massie joined Tucker Carlson and ex-Trump counterterrorism official Joe Kent for a public show of unity around a new political "movement", one built on opposition to the president's Iran war.

Greene shared a photo of the four seated around a wooden table on X on Aug. 1, declaring that Trump "betrayed us all" by breaking his promise to avoid foreign wars. The post drew nearly 10 million views and was shared 15,000 times, a measure of how far frustration with the war has spread inside the president's own base.

The gathering amounts to the most visible step yet by dissident figures on the populist right to channel that frustration into something organized. Greene, Massie, Carlson, and Kent have each paid a political or professional price for breaking with the White House. Now they say they want to build an alternative.

Trump Launches MAGA PAC to Oust Rep. Massie

President Trump's political operation has launched an aggressive effort to unseat Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie, its first such effort to defeat a sitting Republican incumbent, Axios has reported.

By going after Massie, Trump's team is looking to put wayward Republicans on notice that they're ready to play hardball.

Massie has attacked Trump over his strike on Iran, saying on X that it was "not Constitutional," prompting the president to fire back on Truth Social that the congressman is "not MAGA."

He also called Massie "weak, ineffective" and "disrespectful to our great military, and all that they stand for."

Massie was one of two House Republicans to vote against Trump's "big beautiful bill" last month, leading Trump to declare that he should be "voted out of office."
