Calling all visitors to Palm Beach County’s waterways: Be on the lookout for hundreds of floating purple cards.

If you find one, you’ve stumbled onto a research mission involving citizen scientists and a study of how debris moves through inland waterways and accumulates on the coastline.

The 15th Lake Worth Lagoon Drift Card Study kicked off May 1 when volunteers deployed 320 bright purple cards made of thin biodegradable wood at eight different sites in Palm Beach County — from Burt Reynolds Park in Jupiter to Silver Palms Park in Boca Raton.

‘Godfather of AI’ Warns Superintelligent Machines Could Replace Humanity

Geoffrey Hinton, the Nobel Prize-winning computer scientist who pioneered neural networks, says artificial intelligence is advancing too fast to control.

Geoffrey Hinton, the pioneering computer scientist called the “Godfather of AI,” has once again sounded the alarm that the very technology he helped bring to life could spell the end of humanity as we know it.

In an interview clip released Aug. 18 as part of the forthcoming film “Making God,” Hinton delivered one of his starkest warnings yet. He said that humanity risks being sidelined—and eventually replaced—by machines far smarter than ourselves.

“Most people aren’t able to comprehend the idea of things more intelligent than us,” Hinton, a Nobel prize-winner for physics and a former Google executive, said in the clip.

“They always think, well, how are we going to use this thing? They don’t think, well, how’s it going to use us?”

Hinton said he is “fairly confident” artificial intelligence will drive massive unemployment, pointing to early examples of tech giants like Microsoft replacing junior programmers with AI. But the larger danger, he said, goes far beyond the workplace.

“The risk I’ve been warning about the most … is the risk that we’ll develop an AI that’s much smarter than us, and it will just take over,” Hinton said.

Researchers Say Terms ‘Male’ and ‘Female’ Are Offensive

According to a group of U.S. and Canadian scientists, terms like ‘male’ and ‘female’ must be replaced. Instead, they recommend trying terms like ‘sperm-producing,’ ‘egg-producing,’ or ‘XY/XX individual.’

The proposal is part of an effort to end “harmful terminology” in science. The Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Language Project group says that the effort is part of a reckoning with colonialism, white supremacy, and patriarchy.

More than a 1,000 scientists have signed a declaration titled “There Is No Climate Emergency.”

The symbolic document formally rebukes those claiming that climate change is an existential threat to humanity.

“Climate science should be less political, while climate policies should be more scientific,” the group of experts wrote in the declaration.

Climate Intelligence (CLINTEL), an independent foundation specializing in climate change and climate policy, was the catalyst for the declaration. The document includes signatures from scientists, physicists, and climate experts from around the globe. The list of those who signed the document includes former officials from NASA, the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force.
