Just Say "NO"

In almost every election, voters are asked by their local taxing entities to approve a bond package. Here in Palm Beach County we are no exception.

Bonds are debt in which local governments borrow money to pay for things like schools, roads, or infrastructure. In our case, the County is asking us to pass a $200,000,000.00 bond issue for affordable housing. The only thing this will benefit is developers. Affordable housing is a myth.

When voters approve the bonds, they are promising to pay back the loan with interest. Unfortunately, bonds by definition increase the debt and the overall tax burden of the taxpayers.

Say NO to County Question 1--to increase workforce housing units.

"Proposed financial giveaways by the city of Lake Worth Beach has some commissioners wondering if the Gulfstream hotel project will be worth it.

Proposed financial giveaways to developer Restoration St. Louis and property owner CDS Holdings – estimated to be as high as $10 million or more – have made McVoy's support for the project conditional.

That's made him the target of critics and trolls who say the project is key to the city's future.

McVoy isn't alone. Commissioners Kim Stokes and Reinaldo Diaz also have expressed unease with parts of the deal that would restore the original hotel building and add an adjacent 165,000 square-foot structure with more hotel rooms, luxury rentals and a parking garage."

We have a tendency in Lake Worth to give developers what they want. And when it comes to the downtown, certain people will give way the farm especially if they are business owners.

• The city commission can just say "no" to voters who vote in a heights charter amendment for our downtown.

• It can say "no" to an entire neighborhood of about 2,000 people who objected to John Prince Park being bulldozed for a national Spring training stadium directly across from where they live.

• It can say "no" to anyone objecting to a $63 million, 30 year general obligation bond.

• It can say "no" to residents protecting the 50 beach decal spots and give them to screeching, complaining  non-residents and change the description of what they are to "seasonal residents."

but...

• It can't say NO to Fido.

Public Hearing 10-B second reading tomorrow night: No person shall bring into or have on the municipal beach, any cat, dog, pet of any kind or other animal except a service animal trained to provide assistance to an individual with a disability. However, any cat, dog or other domesticated animal shall be allowed on the sidewalk and grassy area of the municipal beach area between the eastern curb of State Road A1A and western base of the dune for the entire length of the municipal beach and shall be on a leash. Said animals must be restrained at all times at a distance of not greater than six (6) feet in length from their handler.
