‘We’re expecting a response from them today (yesterday) at some point,’ the secretary of state said.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said the White House is expecting a response proposal on May 8 from the Iranian regime about ending the war, coming as American and Iranian forces clashed in the region in recent days.

“We’re expecting a response from them today at some point. We have not received that yet,” Rubio told reporters on Friday while he was visiting with the Pope in Italy about negotiations between Washington and Tehran.

Rubio added that U.S. officials hope that the Iranian proposal is “something that can put us into a serious process in negotiation.”

The secretary said the U.S. government is aware of recent reports saying Iran is attempting to create “some agency that’s going to control traffic” in the Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway through which about one-fifth of the world’s oil travels.

“That would actually be unacceptable,” he said.

President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social that a ceasefire was still holding despite a flare-up in the conflict after three U.S. Navy destroyers were attacked as they moved through the strait and that the U.S. military had fired ​back.

US State Department Revokes Green Card of Iranian Whose Mother Was Involved in 1979 Hostage Crisis

‘Her family should never have been allowed to benefit from the extraordinary privilege of living in our country,’ Rubio said in a post on X.

Three Iranian nationals with ties to the Iranian regime were detained this week after the U.S. government ended their lawful permanent resident statuses.

Seyed Eissa Hashemi, Maryam Tahmasebi, and their son are in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) until they are removed from the United States, according to the U.S. State Department.

Eissa Hashemi is the son of Masoumeh Ebtekar, whom Secretary of State Marco Rubio identified as “Screaming Mary.” Rubio also said she was the spokeswoman for the Islamic terrorists who took American hostages at the U.S. Embassy in Tehran in 1979 and held them for 444 days. Rubio said on X that during their captivity, the hostages were starved, beaten, and subjected to mock executions.

“Her family should never have been allowed to benefit from the extraordinary privilege of living in our country,” Rubio said in a post on X. “America can never become home for anti-American terrorists or their families—and under the Trump Administration, it never will.”

The State Department said that Ebtekar “crafted propaganda” that falsely showed that the American hostages were being treated humanely and that the hostages were pressured to say they were not being abused.

Ebtekar eventually married one of the hostage takers and rose in the senior leadership of Iran’s revolutionary regime, according to the State Department.

Hashemi, Tahmasebi, and their son came to the United States in 2014 on visas issued by the Obama administration.

U.S. forces have hit over 1,700 targets in Iran

including 300 new sites — while adding B-1 Lancer and B-52 Stratofortress bombers to the air attack, U.S. Central Command reported Tuesday morning.

President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said on Monday that the attacks could last for at least several weeks, and no end date was currently in the plans. Additional aircraft, weapons and troops were being sent to the conflict.

The Pentagon has confirmed that six Americans have been killed.

The attack update from U.S. Central Command showed that B-1 Lancers and B-52 Stratofortress bombers had taken part in attacks, joining previous missions flown by B-2 Spirits. The B-2 missions were flown on 37-hour round-trip missions from bases in the United States and used aerial refueling.

The B-1 is a supersonic bomber that specializes in low-altitude attacks. The B-52s are four-engine heavy bombers that were built in the 1960s. They primarily use “stand-off” weapons that can be launched from a distance beyond anti-aircraft fire.

The U.S. is using F-15E Strike Eagle II, F-16 Fighting Falcon, F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II fighters; A-10 Thunderbolt ground attack; and EA-18G electronic warfare aircraft, Central Command said.

Targets have included command and control, headquarters, air defense sites, ballistic missile sites, anti-ship missile sites and communications centers. U.S. officials have said eight Iranian ships have been sunk.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned Iran on Monday that the U.S. planned to ratchet up the attacks. “The hardest hits are yet to come,” he said.
