Russia has captured large numbers of Ukrainian drones and may be planning to use them against NATO or to stage a false flag attack, Polish defense minister said, adding to earlier warnings of a potential escalation.

This comes after more than a month of unusual public warnings by several Eastern European countries that Russia was planning some form of provocation or hybrid attack, with officials citing numerous pieces of intelligence.

Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia have been among the countries raising the alarm, some citing U.S. intelligence that had been shared with them.

The latest information, shared by Poland’s defense minister, outlines concrete threat for what was previously a more general warning of Russian malicious intent. 

Threat appears to be taken seriously by Eastern European capitals. In addition to drone incursions, GPS jamming, and various acts of sabotage may be on the table.

Rutte Seeks to Ease Trump-NATO Tensions

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte sought to calm tensions with President Donald Trump at the White House on Wednesday, using a mix of flattery and gentle pushback to argue that examples of allies' reluctance to support the U.S. war with Iran ​were "isolated cases."

The NATO chief is visiting Washington to try to ease strains over the Iran war and U.S. threats to draw down troops in ⁠Europe ahead of a pivotal NATO leaders' summit in July in Ankara.

Trump, a longtime ​NATO critic who has called the alliance a "paper tiger," has been angered by its ⁠reluctance to support the U.S. in the Middle East conflict or help reopen the Strait of Hormuz after a U.S.-Israeli attack on Iran on Feb. 28 disrupted the major oil shipping route.

During the Oval Office meeting, Rutte used cardboard charts to show how much NATO countries have stepped up their defense spending ​since Trump first came into office in 2017.

He also said thousands of U.S. military planes had operated from bases in Europe during the war, pointing to that cooperation as a sign of the allies' support.

The United States accounts for roughly 60% to 62% of all combined NATO military expenditures and Rutte can't afford to lose the U.S. support.

“We are suffering considerably in Germany and in Europe from the consequences of, for example, the closure of the Strait of Hormuz,” Merz said Wednesday, hours before Trump posted his threat on social media. “And in that regard, I urge that this conflict be resolved.”

Trump, for his part, has been full-throated in expressing his frustration with Merz.

On Tuesday, he wrote: “The Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz, thinks it’s OK for Iran to have a Nuclear Weapon. He doesn’t know what he’s talking about!” Trump added that it was no surprise “that Germany is doing so poorly, both economically and in other respects!.”

Germany currently hosts the U.S. military between 30,000 and 35,000 U.S. troops, along with roughly 11,500 civilians, representing one of the largest U.S. military presences abroad making any reduction a significant shift in European security, similar to proposals made during his first term that Biden culled.

Germany plans further substantial increases to NATO, with estimates suggesting, under new proposals, spending could rise drastically to meet new 3.5%–5% GDP goals by 2030-2035.

Total Defense Expenditure (2025/2026): The U.S. remains the largest contributor in dollar terms, spending over $935billion on defense, which is roughly 62% of the combined defense spending of all 32 NATO nations.

President Donald Trump is furious at the unwillingness of America’s European allies to aid the U.S. in reopening the Strait of Hormuz — so angry, in fact, that he is calling the continued usefulness of the alliance into question.

“NATO wasn’t there when we needed them, and they won’t be there if we need them again,” Trump fumed in an all-caps Truth Social post after a Wednesday meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. He added a gratuitous jab at Denmark, “Remember Greenland, that big, poorly run, piece of ice!!!”

Trump’s anger at NATO has been festering for weeks. On March 26, the president wrote (again in all caps), “NATO nations have done absolutely nothing to help with the lunatic nation, now militarily decimated, of Iran. The U.S.A. needs nothing from NATO, but ‘never forget’ this very important point in time!”

Trump does not have unilateral power to withdraw the U.S. from NATO. The 2024 National Defense Authorization Act forbade the president from “suspend[ing], terminat[ing], denounc[ing], or withdraw[ing] the United States from the North Atlantic Treaty” without the advice and consent of the Senate.

But he can begin a conversation about NATO’s purpose, some 77 years after its creation, and that is just what President Trump has chosen to do.

"Secretary of State Marco Rubio did not sugarcoat his view on NATO during a recent TV interview. He told Sean Hannity that after decades of the United States footing the bill and hosting troops in Europe, allies refused a simple request to allow U.S. forces to use their bases for Operation Epic Fury.

Rubio said this refusal shows NATO is acting like a one way street where America gives and gives and gets little in return. He suggested that after the current crisis is resolved, the United States will need to re examine what the alliance actually delivers to American security.

Rubio made a clear point. He said the U.S. did not ask European partners to fight or to strike. The ask was limited to landing rights and access to bases Americans helped pay for and maintain.

When allies answer no to that request, Rubio asked why U.S. forces are even stationed there in the first place. If those facilities are off limits when the United States needs them, their strategic value is compromised.

This is not just a diplomatic complaint. Allowing or denying access to bases can shape how quickly the United States can respond to threats and protect American lives.

Rubio argued the United States has invested hundreds of billions of dollars and placed troops overseas to keep the peace and to deter bad actors. If allies block access during a crisis the practical benefit of those investments comes into question.

The sequence of events deserves to be told plainly, because its logic is devastating.

Iran, through no fault of Turkey’s, targeted a NATO member state with multiple ballistic missile attacks. Turkey, a dues-paying, treaty-bound member of the North Atlantic Alliance, turned to a fellow member for help. It asked Poland to provide a single Patriot air defense battery on a temporary basis, for the straightforward purpose of protecting Turkish civilians and territory from a foreign nation’s missiles. Poland refused.

The United States intervened diplomatically. Washington took up Turkey’s case directly and asked Poland to reconsider. Poland refused again. Consider what that second refusal means.

The United States stations 10,000 of its own troops in Poland, positioned roughly 50 miles from Russian territory. Those soldiers are accompanied by 170 Abrams tanks, hundreds of Bradley fighting vehicles, F-16s, F-15s, and periodic deployments of F-35s. American forces in Poland are not a symbolic gesture. They are a tripwire, and everyone in Warsaw knows it.

If Russia attacked Poland, it would not merely be attacking a NATO member. It would be attacking American soldiers, which means it would be at war with the United States of America.

That guarantee, backed by American blood and treasure, is the single most powerful deterrent Poland possesses. It dwarfs anything in the Polish inventory, including the Patriot batteries Poland chose to keep for itself rather than temporarily share with an ally under fire."

Russia and Belarus start military exercise near NATO border after drone incursion

Russia and Belarus on Friday began their "Zapad 2025" joint military exercises amid escalating tensions following Russian drone incursions into Polish airspace during an attack on Ukraine earlier this week.

"Zapad" (or West in Russian) drills occur every two years and are perceived as intimidation exercises on NATO's eastern flank.

Russia and its key ally Belarus started major joint military drills on Friday, putting NATO on edge days after Poland accused Moscow of escalating tensions by firing attack drones through its airspace.

NATO's eastern flank members that border Belarus – Poland, Lithuania and Latvia – are on high alert over the drills, which Belarus says will be held near Borisov, a town east of the capital Minsk.

All three countries have ramped up security ahead of the exercises, with Poland ordering the complete closure of its border with Belarus for their duration.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned of "critical days" for his country.

Poland's military said it shot down intruding Russian drones after the NATO member and allies scrambled aircraft early on Wednesday in response to what it called an "unprecedented" violation of its airspace as Russian forces attacked in nearby western Ukraine.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said his country's airspace was "violated by a huge number of Russian drones" and those that "posed a direct threat were shot down," adding that he is in "constant contact" with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

Poland has frequently scrambled jets in response to waves of Russian aerial attacks on its neighbor, Ukraine, throughout the war launched more than 3 1/2 years ago.

NATO members are collectively obliged to respond to attacks on other alliance nations under Article 5 of the founding treaty. Russian drones and missiles entering NATO airspace have not been treated as attacks on the alliance.

2. working together with the Indo-Pacific — something President Trump is very much promoting."

Rutte said, Trump is almost single-handedly responsible for pushing NATO member nations to increase their financial support of the underlying NATO treaty, and the protection of all from military aggression.

“President Trump deserves all the praise, because without his leadership, without him being re-elected president of the United States, the 2% this year and the 5% in 2035 — we would never, ever, ever have been able to achieve agreement on this.”

President Trump on Thursday expressed confidence the United States would annex Greenland, even suggesting the head of the NATO alliance could be a key player in facilitating the acquisition.

“I think it will happen,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office during a meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.

“And I’m just thinking, I didn’t give it much thought before but I’m sitting with a man that could be very instrumental. You know, Mark, we need that for international security,” Trump said, gesturing to Rutte.

Rutte agreed that Greenland and the Arctic Circle are critical for security reasons, noting that China and Russia have a growing presence in the region. But he said any discussion about Trump’s attempts to acquire Greenland were outside of his purview.
