Meet Zuri, Baby Giraffe at Lion Country Safari

"The daughter of Pammella, who arrived on Aug. 31 and weighed in at 150 pounds. Lion Country Safari ad a contest via social media to solicit name suggestions. Soon after the contest ended, the newest little giraffe was named Zuri, which means "beautiful" in Swahili."

Lion Country is being sold to a conservationist who says she has big plans for this fabulous property.

This video was from three years ago and at that time Linda Koebner helped two laboratory chimps transition from a life behind bars back to having a normal and happy life at Lion Country Safari. She hadn't seen them in 18 years.

In watching this video, it struck me as very sweet but sad. The 2014 event will be held tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. Lion Country says to get out there early to give yourself enough time to drive through the park to this happy occasion.

Little Mama underwent surgery - Lion Country Safari

Great Apes, or more often referred to as Chimpanzees, can live up to 60 years in captivity. Big Mama is estimated to be 73 years old and lives at Lion Country Safari. Chimpanzees are members of the Hominidae family, along with gorillas, humans, and orangutans. Chimps split from the human branch about 4 to 6 million years ago. We are forever reminded of that relationship as we watch their antics, observe their intelligence and their empathy towards one another, reasons why we are always intrigued by these special animals and wonder why we evolved and they did not.

Chimps are probably one of the most popular animals in the world. And despite such popularity, the chimpanzee's survival is most threatened by us. They are endangered in some areas of the world because of hunting and trapping. Chimpanzees have been used extensively for testing drugs for such diseases as AIDS.

Little Mama underwent two hours of oral surgery to remove some bad teeth. Her lower back was also treated for some wounds. There is a belief that Little Mama performed at one time with the Ice Capades back in the 1940's. She pulled through the surgery like the trooper she has always been.

Lion Country Safari to get Land Use Change

On Tuesday, the Palm Beach County Commission approved more density at Lion Country Safari and will change the zoning. Lion Country says that it wants to develop some of its 637 acres. Guess who is their development consultant...Kilday, who else.

"The growth watchdog group 1,000 Friends of Florida opposed the latest Lion Country Safari proposal, saying the county should encourage development closer to existing roads, jobs and other community services.

"There is no justification of need," Joanne Davis, of 1,000 Friends of Florida, said about allowing more development at Lion Country Safari."

Well, Ms. Davis, if your group could come out in support of Amendment 4, Florida Hometown Democracy, perhaps this sort of political decision would cease to exist.

I have to say that I really enjoyed my first trip to Lion County Safari in Loxahatchee. The last time I thought about prices, they charged by the vehicle no matter how many people riding. Not now. It is expensive at $25.50 a head on down to toddlers between 0 and 2 getting in free. It was what I would call an expensive "trip to the zoo" but not when you consider the cost of taking care of these exquisite animals as well as the Rehab Center they have. Once you get over the initial shock of a car costing $100, you just relax and enjoy a drive-through zoo experience.

The Park opens at 9:30 with the last car at 4:30. We were the first to enter because this is the time of day that they feed the animals and we wanted to see them all. I had two children with me and they didn't want any big old SUV in front of us. I made sure that would not happen.

Lion Country says, "Become a part of the Herd" and we did. It was an enjoyable hour drive on this 320 acre property through this cage-less zoo consisting of 4 miles where animals literally walk right in front of your car. They were not the least bit intimidated by vehicles and casually walked in front or beside us as we drove. In one of the photos, you will see Azizi the baby giraffe that was in a pen with her mother while her father was on the other side of the fence close by. The only thing that we noticed that seemed quite unusual was that it did not seem to have enough shade trees anywhere for all the 900 animals.

We saw Blue Herons, Brown Pelicans, Llamas, a Rhea in one of the photos shown here, beautiful Zebras and more. The water buffalo looked the most content of all the animals. I was amazed that one nine year old could identify all of the animals some being from Madagascar, Brazil, the Sahara Desert, southern Africa, central Asia and others.

The speed limit is posted at 8 mph but I was going much slower taking photos at the same time. You must keep your windows closed and you can not leave your vehicle for any reason. They also have an amusement park, a restaurant and you can buy film if you want to spend $6 more to park your car.
