Sen. Bernie Moreno of Ohio is not letting Dr. Anthony Fauci quietly walk away from the COVID-era questions that still hang over Washington like a bad smell in a sealed room.

According to the report, Moreno delivered a pointed response about Fauci reportedly pleading the Fifth during testimony. That matters because Fauci was not some back-office staffer nobody had ever heard of. He was one of the most visible public health officials in America during the pandemic, and his advice helped shape school closures, business restrictions, masking rules, vaccine pressure, and the daily lives of millions of families.

When a public figure with that much power refuses to answer certain questions under oath, Americans are allowed to notice. The Fifth Amendment Is a Right, Not a Magic Eraser.

In the Fauci case, he refused to answer one question in the three hour Senate hearing. To be clear, the Fifth Amendment is part of the Constitution, and every American has the right to avoid self-incrimination. Conservatives should defend that right even when the person using it is someone they do not trust.

Moreno cited a 2020 incident in Ohio where a mother was tased and arrested at a middle school football game for violating a face mask policy. Moreno stated that this exact event inspired him to run for office, before asking Fauci: "Who the f** do you think you were for doing that?"

But there is also a political and public accountability side to this. If a former top government official repeatedly invokes the Fifth during questioning, voters do not have to pretend it is just another boring legal footnote. The same crowd that told Americans to “follow the science” now seems far less eager to follow the questions.

Former Biden Aide Neera Tanden Does Not Know Who Ordered President’s Autopen Signatures

She admitted that aides were allowed to sign for pardons

Neera Tanden, a former top aide for President Joe Biden, told Congress that she had authorization to direct autopen signatures for the president but does not know who gave the final order.

Tanden served as the director of Biden’s Domestic Policy Council and she told Congress during a testimony on Tuesday that the president used an automatic signature tool allowing for aides to sign pardons, memos, and other official documents in the White House. Tanden said she did not know who authorized those signatures. Per Fox News:

During Tanden’s interview before Congress, which lasted more than five hours, she told lawmakers that, in her role as staff secretary and senior advisor to the former president between 2021 and 2023, she was authorized to direct autopen signatures on behalf of Biden, an Oversight Committee official told Fox News.

Tanden, who reportedly said during her testimony that she had limited interactions with Biden in her role, according to sources familiar with her testimony, described an approval process that left her – at least partly – in the dark about who specifically was giving final approval on the decisions to use the automatic signature tool, even though she simultaneously insisted Biden was in charge.

Tanden reportedly testified that to get approval for the use of autopen signatures she would send decision memos to members of Biden’s inner circle. However, she added that she was not aware of what actions or approvals took place between the time she sent the decision memo and the time she received it back with the necessary approval, according to the source familiar.

Federal authorities have conducted interviews with and obtained testimony from 100 witnesses in an ongoing investigation into President Joe Biden’s alleged mishandling of classified documents, according to a Tuesday report.

ABC News reported that federal officials have primarily focused on former Biden and military aides as well as procedures used when handling the materials. The report said that interviews took place as recently as last week, while some witnesses have been asked to come back in for additional questioning.

Biden, either as a U.S. senator or vice president, did not possess any authority to declassify any materials; Trump, as president, did have that authority.

Nevertheless, special counsel Jack Smith has charged former President Donald Trump in conjunction with his possession of classified documents. And his team incorrectly filed paperwork claiming it had turned over all evidence, as the law requires.

The Oversight Committee announced their testimony on Wednesday, which is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. EST on July 19. Chairman James Comer has led the panel in investigating numerous alleged corruption allegations involving the Biden family as part of a broader GOP inquiry into the first family's dealings.
