Happy Mother's Day

  • Circa 1946
Gail Tsukiyama: "Mothers and their children are in a category all their own. There's no bond so strong in the entire world."

Anonymous: "Of all the gifts that life has to offer, a loving mother is the greatest of them all."

And I had the dearest of Moms who I miss and love every day.

Happy Mother's Day to mothers everywhere.

Remembering your Mother on her Special Day

Mother's Day is on May 13th and Rebecca Hinson, teacher at South Grade Elementary, has a special way of honoring mothers and teaching children to honor, respect and to show love to their mothers through art. Here is her story--
My dear Mother passed away in 2007, but I honor her every Mother’s Day when I bring blooms from my garden to art class. I carefully place each blossom in a little cup of water. Children carefully choose their favorite flower to draw on their Mother’s Day card in pastels. Inside each card they tell their mothers why they love them.

I invite you to honor your Mother by sharing blooms with us at South Grade Elementary. You can drop off blossoms from May 2-11 at 716 South K Street in Lake Worth. Thank you!

Rebecca Hinson

My Mom at age 25 in 1942

I wrote the following 4 years ago but the words and the love are there forever.

Abraham Lincoln said it so sweetly, “All that I am or hope to be, I owe to my angel Mother.”

All mothers are just that even if you don’t think so at the time. I had the sweetest of mothers. I never heard her say anything unkind about anyone except perhaps one time. I guess that’s why I remember it; it was so rare. A neighbor was bugging the Board of Directors and she said, “She was always a pain in the ass.” Other than that, she accepted people the way they were in spite of the flaws and personality quirks that we all have from time to time and in spite of our difference of opinions. She always saw the “good” and did not dwell on the “bad.”

My Mom was very smart. She never worried about the future and always told me that I would be okay. She assessed her children honestly and never bored her friends to death by bragging about them. She knew her children were not the most beautiful, not the smartest, not the most clever but she knew what her kids were all about and of what they were capable. She knew we had good hearts even if we kept our deeds or feelings to ourselves. She also knew that we loved and respected her.

Mothers always want what is best for us even when we make these dreadful mistakes: spouses, job choices, spending money on that new car that was unnecessary, spoiling our kids, etc. They have wisdom that we don’t appreciate until years later after we have lived a little, or after they are gone, we come to realize how perfect our mothers were…how right they were, not some of the time but all of the time and how we wished that we had actually listened.

I miss my Mom and think of her every day and wish that she was still here, to talk to and to tell her how much she is loved. For all of you who still have your mothers, cherish them. For all of you whose moms have passed, be blessed in their sweet memory today and every day.

Happy Mother’s Day--to mothers to be and mothers who were.

Taken 4 months before she passed at 87

Not having been a mother, I can't possibly relate or understand all that goes into that role. I read about others who say and expound on their Moms and what positive influences they were in their lives and who credit their Moms and Dads for being the person they are today. It really does have a lot to do with it.

My Mom passed away in 2004 and not a day goes by that I don't get emotional with tears thinking about her and how much she meant to me...I miss her with all my heart.

She never was demonstrative in her affection nor did she dish out those words like candy. That was how she was raised but I always knew she was there for me. We were not a kissy family nor were we into openly expressing affection or constantly saying those three words, "I love you" validating our love. It was just always understood and my brother and I felt comfortable in that love. The day before she died, she used those three rare words. You can't imagine how important that was for me and I am sure that she knew that too.

I love you too, Mom, not only today but every day. I wish that I had told you that more often than I did.
