You can learn everything you need to know about a leader by watching who they surround themselves with. For New York City’s incoming socialist mayor Zohran Mamdani, that lesson arrived before he even took the oath of office.

Mamdani’s November victory made history; he’ll become the city’s first Muslim mayor when he’s sworn in on January 1. But the celebration was tempered by deep unease among New York’s Jewish community, the largest outside of Israel.

Exit polls confirmed what many suspected: most Jewish voters rejected Mamdani. The Anti-Defamation League was so concerned they launched a tracker to monitor his administration’s policies the day after his election.

Given this scrutiny, you’d think Mamdani’s transition team would exercise extraordinary care in vetting appointments. …but you’d be wrong.

On Wednesday, Mamdani proudly announced Catherine Almonte Da Costa as his Director of Appointments—the person responsible for recruiting leadership across his entire administration. By Thursday afternoon, she had resigned in disgrace after researchers unearthed a trail of antisemitic social media posts.

"They are calling on lawmakers to implement a 32-hour work week when Congress is out of session, claiming the policy will reduce burnout and increase employee retention. 😂

The Congressional Progressive Staff Association (CPSA) — which describes itself as “an official congressional staff organization whose mission is to advance the interests of current and prospective progressive staffers” — drafted an open letter to be sent later Thursday that requests a reduced workweek, with the stated aim of “improv[ing] worker satisfaction, increas[ing] staff retention in Congress, and model[ing] a more sustainable approach to work on a national level,” according to the letter.

The policy would establish a 32-hour work week for Capitol Hill staffers when Congress isn’t in session, as well as a 32-hour work week for district office employees when Congress is in session."

It won't happen with DOGE. “I’m hearing via allies that federal government unions are scrambling to update their collective bargaining agreements to avoid getting fired,” Ramaswamy wrote on X Monday. “The prospect of being asked to return to the office 5 days per week like most working Americans apparently has them ‘in tears.'”

In his lone public remarks on the Taliban takeover, Biden claimed the surrender of the U.S.-trained Afghanistan military unexpected, but a source familiar with the July 13 cable told the Journal the Taliban's advance was imminent and the Afghanistan military would not stop it.

The confidential cable was sent over the State Department dissent channel and also offered recommendations on expediting evacuations and pleaded with the administration to speak out against the Taliban's "atrocities being committed," sources told the Journal.

The City of Lake Worth has hired a new Director of Information Technology, Lee Menke, who will start today. Lee comes to the City with 15 years of state and municipal government experience in Information Technology leadership, management and project development.

Lee is leaving a position as the Information Systems Manager for the Broward County Board of County Commissioners where he directed the IT Operations of the 9th largest library system in the country. In this position he maintained 99.9% uptime for an extensive data centre; developed cloud and local based capital projects that improved efficiency and productivity; managed the Digital Divide project which provides internet access to economically disadvantaged residents and deployed 450 hotspots to provide internet access to retired and active military personnel and their families.

“As technology has changed and improved, Lake Worth has had a difficult time keeping up.  Limited resources and implementation issues have hampered our capabilities, however having someone like Lee come on board will propel us into the future.” ~City Manager Michael Bornstein

Lake Worth Code Department in turmoil?

Lake Worth's Code Department deals with a myriad of issues. Being a code enforcement officer has to be one of the most stressful jobs in the city. It seems that these days, if you look cross-eyed at someone and/or don't perform under the radar, you are terminated.

We all have been complaining about the condition of properties within our city for years and nothing ever seems to change.  Officers are overworked and they are cross-trained to address multiple violations.  Property owners still screw around and violate our laws. They're written up, given a warning; they fix it and two weeks later it's back in the same condition.

Even our commissioners run on platforms saying they will crack down on slum and blight and code infractions but when push comes to shove, nothing changes--all empty promises. Our Vice Mayor has been talking about it for 17 years.

For years, we have heard that employee moral is down in our city and the following complaint by a former code officer who had not yet filled her probation period (6 months) is evidence of the various problems relative to her experience. If the allegations are true, it is a jaw-breaking, astounding pronouncement of intolerable conditions and lack of leadership at City Hall. Is it easier to just terminate than get to the truth?

This e-mail was sent to the city commission. I have been told that prior complaints were sent to the city manager as well as the Human Resource Director.  What is going on in the Code Compliance Department? What was this employee's fate? They terminated her. Read about her explosive allegations.

I met Melissa at the budget meeting of July 26. She will be assisting our city clerk, Pamela Lopez.

The Budget was interesting in the effect that it was a follow-up on the first budget meeting where city staff presented their wish list that consisted of expenditures of $842,585 more than the proposed budget. The total operating budget is now $32,804,532.

Reserves dropped at the end of 2015 by $921,194 to $4,043,984. it was stated that a safe and comfortable reserve would be around $4.5 million.

Capital equipment purchases amount to $414,000. And with the new chipper costing $39,000, commissioner Amoroso said that residents are always looking for mulch and perhaps it can be dumped up by the ballfield.

We will be getting two additional sheriff deputies for $246,800. Cpt. Baer did say that two were needed at our beach.

It was mentioned that all of the items they discussed were approved at the last budget meeting by consensus. I thought expenses had to be actually voted on at public meeting and up for discussion.

Lake Worth employee graduates from Apprentice Lineman Program

Guillermo Canzares

Mr. Canzares recognized on Tuesday night by the mayor, has been with the city for 16 years starting out as a meter reader. He just graduated from the apprentice program and now holds the prestigious position of a lineman for Lake Worth Utilities.

Lake Worth started this program in January 2012 and it is registered with the Florida Department of Education. Apprentices are required to stay with Lake Worth for at least two years after they complete their training and receive their certificates.
