Kennedy Center faces bankruptcy, says Trump's name on facade is the only path to survival

The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is warning its own board that the institution faces "certain fiscal collapse" and could shut its doors within days, unless President Trump's name goes on the building.

A 57-page internal packet distributed to the Kennedy Center's board of trustees lays out the stakes in blunt terms: without adding Trump's name to the facade, the center risks bankruptcy, mass layoffs, and a potential closure as early as Tuesday, September 15.

The documents, first obtained by The Washington Post and also reported by The New York Times, include a draft resolution that details ten options for placing the president's name below the main signage on the front of the building.

The draft resolution states plainly that within a few weeks the institution will not be able to pay its employees or cover basic maintenance costs. A special board meeting is scheduled for September 15 to address the crisis.

Trump offered to raise the money, but the center has to recognize him first.

At the heart of the standoff is a conditional offer. Trump has "offered to step in and raise the necessary funds" to rescue the center, USA Today reported. But the draft resolution makes clear that the board believes this lifeline depends on what it calls "appropriate recognition."
