White House pressed China for death sentences on illegal fentanyl chemical suppliers

The Trump administration has strongly encouraged China to hand down death sentences for some arrested fentanyl precursor dealers, a push tied to last week’s summit with Xi Jinping.

In the wake of a three-day Washington summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, the White House disclosed that the United States pressed Beijing to impose the harshest available penalties on Chinese nationals tied to the chemical pipeline feeding illegal fentanyl.

That pressure followed Chinese arrests made on U.S. leads and came as the administration highlighted new Chinese export controls, tougher drug guidelines, and what it cast as fresh progress against the synthetic opioid crisis that has devastated American families for years.

The core demand was blunt. After China took down a network of chemical suppliers, Washington did not ask for light treatment.
