Socialist and communist groups coordinated 'spontaneous' anti-ICE protests in Austin, investigation finds

Within hours of an ICE officer shooting a Venezuelan national in Austin, Texas, a network of socialist and communist organizations launched a synchronized social-media campaign and mobilized protesters to the scene, all while local media described the demonstrations as spontaneous.

The shooting happened around 12:56 p.m. Central Time on Sunday, September 20, when an ICE officer fired on 28-year-old Wilber Rafael Garcés Pérez during a traffic stop near Anderson Square and Research Boulevard. Pérez was hospitalized in serious but stable condition and later placed in federal custody.

By 4:19 p.m., roughly three and a half hours later, the Party for Socialism and Liberation's national X account had posted "BREAKING. MAN SHOT BY ICE AGENTS IN AUSTIN" and "ICE OUT OF AUSTIN NOW!" The Austin PSL chapter simultaneously pushed a matching graphic on Instagram, coordinating with PSL chapters in Houston, San Antonio, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Waco.

A Fox News Digital investigation traced the rapid mobilization across at least three distinct far-left organizations, the PSL, the Democratic Socialists of America's Austin chapter, and the Freedom Road Socialist Organization.

It was found that their social-media posts went live within minutes of each other, carried coordinated messaging, and funneled thousands of supporters toward the protest site before most local outlets had finished reporting the basic facts of the shooting.
