An Impatient Driver on Lake Osborne

We who live out here see it all of the time. Crazy drivers, too impatient to slow down for the wildlife that crosses the road...speeding, in a hurry to get to Publix. Doves and turtles have been run over. Drivers beep their horns at them...ducks don't understand...they just waddle across the road. It is their habitat too. One of these days it will be a human being...then what? Will we finally get speed bumps? Considerate drivers? How can anyone be in that big of a hurry to kill a living, breathing animal that is hurting no one?

Slow down and smell the roses and remember that our wildlife needs protection.

Unique Muscovy in Lake Worth

Lake Worth is a unique little city and we even have unigue Muscovy ducks. The coloring on this one is something I have never seen...blue feathers.

White French Muscovy at Lake Osborne

As reported several months ago, we have a White French Muscovy duck living out here at Lake Osborne. I think he perhaps escaped from a farm or hatchery. French Muscovies are "quackless" but they can hold their own with all the other ducks...they don't mess with "our" Muscovy. He has a quiet voice, calm demeanor and minds his own business, not really mingling with the other birds too often but when he does, he is king.

White Muscovy

I always wonder why people don't like the Muscovy duck. There are a lot of myths out there.

What prompted this photo taken yesterday was a man on the trail who lives in Murry Hills who stopped to tell me that Muscovies were the reason why none of our wading birds on Lake Osborne have been around in awhile. He was complaining that they had a lot of these lousy ducks down where he lives. I asked him if the disappearance of the wading birds had anything to do with all the rain and the fact that the lake was too high? Did it have anything to do with the fact that the County is mowing down all of their habitats at John Prince Park? "No," he said, "Muscovies eat the eggs of other birds."

Just read this morning where waterbirds are coming back so walked down to the lake to see what I could find and feed the Muscovy ducks. What appeared besides ducks? Ibis, Woodstorks and Seagulls came flying in to be fed.
