West Palm Beach Mayor addresses AntiSemetism

Crime, homelessness, antisemitism: WPB mayor delivers 5th annual State of the City Address

West Palm Beach Mayor Keith James delivered the fifth annual State of the City Address Thursday morning.

Some of the main topics James touched on was violent crimes, homelessness, economic growth, residential development, infrastructure improvements and inclusivity for all demographics in the city. Also, he brought up antisemitism.

James said a notable antisemitic incident occurred this time a year ago, when two masked men used a projector to reveal a swastika and other hateful messages on the AT&T building downtown. More acts of hate were seen in other parts of the community through the rest of the year, but the mayor says it will not be tolerated in 2024.

“We swiftly implemented measures to combat hateful acts, sending a clear act that west palm beach stands firmly against discrimination and hate of any type. Not here, not in our city. Not on our watch,” said James.

The city adopted an ordinance that would result in jail time and fines for anyone who participates in this kind of hate. I think Lake Worth Beach should as well.

State of the City

I have always had a problem with this---not the speech per se, as the mayor has always been a cheerleader for Lake Worth, but the date. It is always before our local elections which definitely, no doubt about it, gives an advantage to the incumbent running for re-election. In this case, the mayor's State of the City speech is two weeks before the election and will be nothing more than propaganda. It's like, "see how great we are...why would you even think about voting for anyone else?"

The other peeve I have is the saying "moving the city forward" that this present commission tosses out like candy. Hey guys, it has no where else to go but forward. There may not be any improvements in the slum, blight, crime (unless you believe PBSO stats) and illegal alien situation but changing the name of our city, selling 501 Lake Avenue, and yanking out our pool to spend small fortunes is not "moving anything forward." All that will do is get the property owners deeper in debt or using some else's money (the taxpayer), something politicians love to do.

Commissioner Maxwell can complain about Herman or Omari bringing up objections or a point by accusing them of being "political," but that charge could apply at any time of year and if true, nothing would ever get done but continue on as "business as usual."  Don't buck the system says the Trio.

The State of the City needs to be given AFTER the election to make it a fair playing field.

Lake Worth Mayor misses Key Points in State of the City

Palm Beach Post

Lake Worth Mayor Misses Key Points

There were talking points not being talked about by the Lake Worth mayor at the annual State of the City address. (“Lake Worth is on the rise and getting better, mayor says,” Feb. 8)

Her statement of “turning back the clock on years of benign neglect,” I guess does not include the neglect of the public pool which is in dire need of repair for the past two years. A possible solution would be money acquired through tourist tax revenue since the pool is for tourists as well as locals.

The Gulfstream Hotel and the seven years of neglect by Hudson Holdings, which is further delayed due to a lawsuit amongst the partners. A possible solution to look into could be eminent domain, where the city would take back the property and create jobs and revenue for the city.

Another point not talked about is our solar field. Is it operational? If not, when and will it be expanded upon for Lake Worth to become energy-independent from other sources, which would put monies back into our community.

Some other points of interest that should be addressed are red-light cameras at intersections. Are they operational? If so, at what cost, and are they constitutional?

So, people of Lake Worth, these are some of the topics that should be talked about by our elected officials in the upcoming elections. If not by our current officials, then by newly elected representatives who think progressively for the good of all of the people of Lake Worth.

State of the City

I still say, having a State of the City presentation just one month before re-election, is nothing more than a campaign speech. It is so obvious to everyone that it just slaps you in the face. This is a way to attract new voters and campaign at the same time--for free!

The mayor is, after all, a PR person by trade and she has always been Lake Worth's biggest cheerleader. She does an outstanding job at that. But it is what it is and we have no influence to change the timing of the State of the City address in order to make our election process fair even if it will never be balanced. Incumbents have a huge advantage as it is.

Although I did not attend, I am sure that the city was presented in a 100% positive light--even though we have tremendous code issues, slum, blight and crime and addicts over-dosing all over our city. And don't forget,  we have rate parity with FPL. or so we have been told.  Even if true, our water bills are out of sight.

State of the City Address - Pam Triolo

I've always said, the mayor is a great cheerleader for our city. Her speech, which was delivered with perfection, was upbeat and positive and almost had me convinced that we are doing great things all of the time, that the past is irrelevant and we are finally, and at last, on the right track.

Pam Triolo's Speech and State of the City

Comment Up

Click here... Triolo acknowledged the city has a “bad reputation” among potential investors, with some of the main reasons being high electric rates, outdated and inconsistent land development regulations and poor customer service, so wrote Thompson of the Palm Beach Post.

This Trio reduced electric rates even to the point of putting our beach park in a deficit position for 2016. Back in 2013, Utility Financial Solutions told them that without significant reductions in the costs of operations and increases to the general fund contributions, the proposed 4.5% reduction in electric rates would not be sustainable after 2014.

What did they do? They didn't even listen to a paid expert. Instead, they wanted to project a false image that they were really doing something to help the poor city resident who complained about his electric bill from time to time. They wanted to impress any possible investor, where just the thought of high rates, could deter him from coming to Lake Worth by saying we are near parity with FPL. They raised the water instead which really affects the residential community the most.

They have had 4.5 years to turn around whatever negative image our city may have. The mayor even owns a marketing company. She must have had a few idea during all this time.

Electioneering at Mayor Pam Triolo's State of the City address?

Comment Up

There seems to be a big push to "get out the vote." First we had the LW YES Pac send out a reminder to vote and where our precinct is located and now Michael Chase Flack Fox with a voter's registration table set up at the Lake Worth Casino where Pam Triolo was giving her State of the City political speech and who is up for re-election on March 15, 47 days from now.

Florida passed a law in 2012 that requires groups that register voters to turn in completed forms within 48 hours or risk fines, among other things. If Mr. Fox was affiliated with a voter's registration organization or someone from the Supervisor's office was there, he could register voters.  Otherwise, he could pass out the forms but not collect them according to the Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections office.

The problem that I see in this endeavor is the fine line between a State of the City speech which is full of every positive/embellished thing an elected official can muster to bring attention to her achievements, true or false, and its timing of the event. The very fact that it was given on public property with an election just weeks away is problematic. I would imagine that she ran it by the city attorney first, thus costing the taxpayers of this city.

104.31. Political activities of state, county, and municipal officers and employees
(1) No officer or employee of the state, or of any county or municipality thereof, except as hereinafter exempted from provisions hereof, shall:
(a) Use his or her official authority or influence for the purpose of interfering with an election or a nomination of office or coercing or influencing another person's vote or affecting the result thereof.

Located in central Palm Beach County, Lake Worth is a dynamic, multi-cultural city with an individualistic style. People are drawn to the city by its acceptance of different cultures and lifestyles, historic districts, hip downtown and colorful arts district.

CITY OF LAKE WORTH E-MAIL DISCLAIMER:

PLEASE NOTE: Florida has a very broad public records law. Most written communications to or from local officials regarding city business are public records available to the public and media upon request. Your e-mail communications may therefore be subject to public disclosure.

As I have heard all this cheerleading before, I probably will not attend and just stay home, relax and get ready for the Republican Debate that is later in the evening.  My question, as the election is only 47 days away, is a State of the City given by the mayor who is up for re-election even kosher? Is it campaigning? It is a very thin line and it is taking advantage of a public facility as well as providing free parking.

At the State of the City Address the mayor gave the biggest rah rah speech of her political career and of course, it was right before the election. She even went so far as to tell us that crime was down and everyone wildly cheered. I had to wonder what vacuum they came from. Down from what? Can any politician EVER tell the truth? She wonders why they are not trusted. Why do they want to paint this rosy picture. All you have to do is read the crime reports.  Ride down one of our streets and you can see that things are not too sweet. We have so much crime that we can't even see straight. Read the horrible stats.

We are ranked number 35 in 2015 as one of the most dangerous cities in the United States. 35! We used to be number 42! We are getting closer to number 1 every year. We are worse than Miami. As the report illustrates, the highest crime rates are found in areas of high population density, lower income and – often - lower real estate values than neighboring communities (and we have all three in Lake Worth). This commission continues to approve of more affordable housing, attracting more and more poor folks, more density, more problems and the cycle continues.

Lake Worth State of the City Address

Comment Up

The Honorable Mayor Pam Triolo is having her annual State of the City Address two weeks before the election. Timing is everything.

Seating and parking are free on a first come served basis.  The city placed a full page ad in the Lake Worth Herald (its favored news rag that now has news articles filled with opinion) for the residents to join her to hear about all the progress that she and this commission have done to get us into the 21st Century--eradicating slum, blight and crime to name a few. She wants to inform us of our "full potential" that will cost taxpayers millions if she touches on the roads infrastructure and her failed general obligation bond that she wants to bring back in some form.  Perhaps she will talk about the heights vote and how she screwed the voters who won the election by not honoring the 57% who said 45 feet in our downtown is all they wanted.

We all will find out on Tuesday, February 24th from 6 to 8 pm.

The Mayor's Speech

Comment Up

Prior to the mayor's State of the City Address held at the Lake Worth Casino, some of us were greeting the cars as they pulled onto our beach property holding our Vote YES signs.

The mayor began her speech with a lot of doom and gloom. After having heard the speech, no one in the world would want to have moved here--NO ONE. Talking about the poverty rate, to our schools and her pointing out low scores on their SAT's (nothing was said about a large majority of them coming from immigrant families with parents who speak NO English), to our property values that have plummeted. Again, nothing was mentioned about the depression that this country suffered with property values falling in every city in America or the fact that we have older housing stock on 25 foot lots that helped us become a bigger statistic.

One of the confusing parts of the speech was when the mayor talked about our General Fund, Revenues and Expenses. She said that revenues were now ahead of expenses even though the back-up that was handed out showed differently. One glaring bar chart showed the amount of money that was spent from reserves in 2008/2009 budget year. Susan Stanton was hired after that and turned the trend 180^  by cutting spending, keeping the city in the black.  After that, Scott Maxwell and his majority fired Stanton for doing the impossible.

She brought up the Land Development Regulations by saying they were confusing and our electric rates indicating that it was her commission that was straightening them all out. She took credit for the Casino opening--everyone clapped, even Scott Maxwell who was always against the casino from day one. She took credit for the Snook islands when some of these people wanted to figure out how to stop Phase II of the Snook Island project in order to put in a marina.

She totally annihilated the heights referendum saying that 65 foot buildings only could be built east of Federal when everyone knows that the Charter Allows 65 feet east of Dixie and 100 feet west of Dixie.
Basically,  she spoke to the choir with around 60 of her core group in attendance along with some staff.
