Interior Department announces layoffs for over 2,000 workers

The Interior Department has dropped a significant bombshell, revealing plans to cut 2,050 jobs across its sprawling network of agencies.

According to Just the News, the department disclosed this move in a court filing on Monday to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, outlining layoffs that will impact 89 units or agencies.

Among the hardest hit are the Bureau of Land Management with 470 job cuts, the Fish and Wildlife Service losing 140 positions, and the National Park Service facing 270 reductions, with over 180 of those in key regions like the Southeast, Northeast, and Pacific West.

The department insists this isn’t a reaction to the federal government shutdown that began on Oct. 1 after Congress failed to pass a spending bill. Rachel Borra, the chief human resources officer, stated in the filing that the layoff plans “predated” the shutdown, aiming to distance the decision from current political gridlock.

Trump Admin Warns ‘Imminent’ Job Cuts Coming as Dems Block Funding Bill

The Trump Administration is preparing to lay off federal workers if the government shutdown continues.

Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought confirmed the move on a call with House Republicans Wednesday.

Vought said reductions in force, or “RIFs,” are “imminent.” He told lawmakers layoffs were “likely a day or two out.”

Senate Democrats have rejected the GOP funding plan twice in 24 hours. They blocked the measure before and after the shutdown began.

The Senate is not expected to vote again until today as they were off yesterday for Yom Kippur.

Two major Pizza Hut operators in California will be laying off all of their delivery drivers thanks to a new law that raises the minimum wage to $20 per hour for fast food employees.

In September California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) signed a law raising the minimum wage for fast-food workers to $20 per hour. “Eighty percent of the workforce, these fast food places – 80 percent of people of color, two thirds…are women, the majority are breadwinners and we have the opportunity to reward that contribution, reward that sacrifice and stabilize an industry in turn. What a remarkable moment,” Newsom said in September during the bill signing.

"In response to looming financial downturns, Zuckerberg is laying the groundwork for mass layoffs at Meta. Zuckerberg put managers on notice to start identifying those “who are unable to get on track” for future cuts.

Discussing the situation at Meta, Zuckerberg said,” If I had to bet, I’d say that this might be one of the worst downturns that we’ve seen in recent history.”

Zuckerberg is blaming the downturn on employee performance. I wonder if he has even thought that it could be due to all the conservative voices he has banned, blocked or restricted. Did that ever occur to him? Many people have left Facebook and are now on Truth Social or other social media platforms. Facebook lawyers are now claiming the fact checkers who regularly censor viewpoints they don’t agree with are merely expressing their opinions, according to the New York Post.

Budget Cuts at Lake Worth (Beach) on WPEC

Last night,  CBS12 had a segment on the layoffs at Lake Worth (Beach). City Manager Michael Bornstein was interviewed giving his reasons for the budget cuts.

Next they interviewed the owner of Dave's Last Resort who complained about all the power outages and hopes that our electric utility gets more reliable. Dave, our power is very reliable--perhaps you need to get an electrician to check your wiring if you are having so many problems.

Layoffs loom as Lake Worth Beach struggles with electric utility issues

The above is the headline from the Palm Beach Post. As Commissioner Omari Hardy said, “It’s going to be a painful time for the city. The fact that we are even considering layoffs when the economy is ostensibly quite strong shows that, as a city, we are not where we need to be.”

All we talk about is spending money such as a new aquatic center. Fix the pool that we have! Stop insisting that we have to be in parity with FPL. We have to run our electric utility to break-even and have cash for capital projects, etc. Commissioners don't want to take money from the utility and give to the General Fund but they continue to put our electric utility in a financial bind.
