Protesters form human chain around Lake Worth Beach cemetery

They demand proper fencing around 2 historically Black burial locations

Residents of Lake Worth Beach got together to advocate for two of the area's historically Black cemeteries on Tuesday night, forming a human chain around one of them. "To make it look presentable, safe and secure for our loved ones we have back here," Retha Lowe, one of the organizers, said. "You have people drinking, throwing trash here on A Street, defecating here. It's not right," activist Hazzler Decime said.

"To me, it's a simple ask," Commissioner Sarah Malega said. "We should've done this years ago. We own the cemeteries. It's our responsibility."

Our two cemeteries It wasn't that long ago that this commission entertained the idea of selling our two cemeteries because they were losing money. They didn't want the responsibility back then.

Well, they're dead people and they really can't vote!

The question for me is, can Lake Worth take care of anything? Can anyone do their job?

We pour money into other areas of the city like our parks and the Osborne Center that don't generate money either but the City can't take care of our cemetery or our pool at the Casino?

When they don't do the job, the first thing they want to do is outsource it or give it away on a public private partnership, sell it or some damn thing. And they all got raises to boot!

The only cemetery that I am familiar with is Pinecrest.
"In 1915, the Lake Worth governing body appointed a committee to scout around and find a suitable location for a cemetery. The committee members reported that there was a 9.2 acres parcel adjoining the southwest corner of the town, immediately west of A Street between 9th Avenue South and 12th Avenue South. The city commission was urged to buy the land before the price went up, which they did, paying $10 per acre for a total of $920.00. [Geneological Society of the Palm Beaches]

Today's Memorial Day Service at Pinecrest Cemetery

The service was wonderful and the crowd was good considering it was not advertised anywhere. Others in attendance were the entire Lake Worth Commission and Mayor Betty Resch spoke; The Women's Club laid a wreath; one of my old friends, Joe Matthews from American Legion Post 47 spoke and Father Quesnel Delvard from Sacred Heart gave the Invocation and Benediction.
