Ira Lee Sorkin, attorney for Bernie Madoff, is described as likeable and savvy. He is a former SEC prosecutor. He has defended other highly profiled people in the past one of whom was the managing Director of Merrill Lynch, Robert Furst.
Furst got convicted on one count of conspiracy and two counts of wire fraud. He was released after one year on appeal and eventually his conviction was overturned in 2006.
Mr. Sorkin is now getting death threats and hate mail because he is defending Bernie, the icon of corruption on Wall Street. Mr. Sorkin just doesn’t understand why he is being victimized in this fashion as everyone is entitled to a defense he says.
It pays to be able to hire the best. Chin up, Ira. Just think of all those attorney fees you will earn on this one if the government doesn’t kick you off the case first. The government claims a potential conflict of interest. What was it? Madoff created a phony account in Sorkin's name to move stolen money offshore in his Ponzi scheme. Ira says he knows nothing.
