Proposed Beach & Casino Groundbreaking Events

Comment Up

Here's my question--Is everyone NUTS? The City wants these elaborate kick-off ground breaking events for the new casino and has proposed the following 2 options:

1. May 8. Invite the community to the traditional groundbreaking event and provide lunch. Activities for children, a bonfire on the beach, create a mural, pay for hardhats, shovels, and sledgehammers for special guests, etc.
Estimated total cost: $20,000.

2. May 6 . From 7pm to 11pm the city would host a Gala Dinner under a white tent with dancing.
Estimated cost of dinner, $55,000.
May 7. 1pm to 8pm. Invite the community to the groundbreaking event with all sorts of activities: rides, food, arts & craft vendors, side show and Live music ending with a bonfire on the beach.
Estimated cost: $20,000

TOTAL ESTIMATED COST FOR 2 DAY EVENT: $75,000.

IS EVERYONE NUTS? Now, the City is either in a state of financial emergency or it is not. Which is it? Can anyone be responsible? JUST ONE PERSON, PLEASE.

P.S. Commissioner Scott Maxwell was the only one who questioned the expense of this groundbreaking event. The rest of the Commission was silent.

I guess this falls under the category of lake Worth, the "Selectively Broke" city. And when you say "the city proposes" you should just say "Stanton would like", because as we all know, Stanton controls what happens in this city.

Actually Lynn, that is slightly less than the $80,000 originally proposed by the City Manager.

Can you imagine what Parks and Rec Dept. thinks about being rejected in their request for a Marketing person for their underutilized athletic programs?
The Commission really can't claim a lack of funds for the vacant Internal Auditor mandated by the Charter! Or can they?

When queried by Commissioner Maxwell, she said "It could be $80,000." This is the most hair-brained scheme yet. And I can't lose my cool at the lectern anymore...darn.

Who approves this kind of thing!!!!
Let's have a ground breaking....invite the press and all the people.....buy a ribbon, and bring a pair of scissors and a shovel from home.... It would cost about $20 bucks.....and then hire back some of the people they are planning on firing.....I'd say thats about 3 people's yearly salaries!!!! What a wast of $$$! Who's running this city!!!?!
