Florida takes a stand against a developer

If you give developers an inch, they will always take a mile particularly when you have accommodating politicians.  Commissioners in this county on a 3 to 2 vote allowed a development in an area of critical state concern.  "Land developers in Lake County who want to flatten a hill in the fragile Green Swamp to make way for a residential development are facing a challenge from the state — the only one of its kind in the past three years.

The state agency, the Department of Economic Opportunity, charged with protecting Florida's most critical environmental treasures is joining an attempt to block a developer from mining about 3 million cubic yards of sand from the area of rolling hills that sits atop the Floridan Aquifer and helps naturally clean much of the state's drinking water."

Charles Lee, advocacy director for Audubon of Florida said, "I think it's particular slimy … to be suggesting that this big sand-mining operation is justified by making a handicapped-friendly development."
