DeSantis Tosses Math books

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis wants to take feelings out of Math

DeSantis on Monday defended his education department’s rejection of math textbooks as part of an effort to eliminate social-emotional learning, a teaching philosophy that helps kids manage their feelings and show empathy for others, from the subject curriculum.

“Math is about getting the right answer. We want kids to learn to think so they get the right answer,” DeSantis said at a press conference in Jacksonville. And common Core is out!

“It’s not about how you feel about the problem or to introduce some of these other things. There’s a right answer and there’s a wrong answer. And we want our students getting the right answer.” [NYPost]

Overall, 41 percent of math textbooks were deemed unfit for use.

Censorship and banning books from schools is something Republicans used to warn us that liberals would do.

But it's okay when Republicans do it.

Make it make sense.

Math is about 2+2 equals 4...not critical race theory, if you get my drift. Liberals never get it.

1st....Teaching Common Core is about enforcing mediocrity and making it hard for bright kids to shine over the much less gifted ones. This is how Nature works. Think of Common Core as a tool for the de-evolution of our species.

To the anonymous poster that thinks that "Book-banning" and "Censorship" have anything to do with choosing the best books for school kids to learn with, there are hundreds of choices for math text books that the school board should be aware of. Some books are pathetic, while some other books are good and effective instruments for learning.

There is both good and bad in the world.

If you owned a construction company and had to hire carpenters and electricians, imagine the shoddy home construction that could result from hiring the BAD carpenters and the bad electricians. Imagine what happens to you if you need to hire an attorney and you get one that is so bad that they should not be allowed to practice law.

The right choice in books needs to be made by people that have an excellent sense of what books are good for learning. These people will never choose Common Core. Thank God for Ron DeSantis!

Of the books, 28 were rejected because they "incorporate prohibited topics or unsolicited strategies, including [critical race theory].

Where are you coming from 5:06? We're talking about arithmetic. How could you conflate this with censorship and banning book?

People only hear headlines. Therefore, they hear a blurb about DeSantis, and that is what they walk away with. I have tried to explain to several people what DeSantis is really saying, but I don't know if they get it.

Americans are really dumbed down from social media. And that's not the only factor. They really don't want to do too much thinking.
