Sea Level Risings

What Miami could look like in 2100

As there is a segment of people in our city, even city staff, who like to ridicule Commissioner McVoy on his concerns about global warming and sea levels rising, a major new report released yesterday by a coalition of senior political and economic figures from the left, right and center, including three Treasury secretaries stretching back to the Nixon administration says that "more than a million homes and businesses along the nation’s coasts could flood repeatedly before ultimately being destroyed."

The report further stated that Coastal counties, home to 40 percent of the nation’s population, will take especially large hits from the rise of the sea, which could swallow more than $370 billion worth of property in Florida and Louisiana alone by the end of the century. The immediate danger to us here in Lake Worth is salt water intrusion. Lake Worth completed its $24 million reverse osmosis water plant that can  pump five to seven million gallons of water a day that flows without threats from saltwater. Presently, we are using a combination of RO and wells using only 1.5 to 3 million gallons a day from RO. We did have a water restriction up until a year ago that was imposed on our water irrigation usage to one time per week in order to avoid saltwater intrusion. That was lifted in January 2013 when the city wanted to generate more revenue.

Now the City is going to charge 5.25% more for water and sewer rates will rise accordingly starting October 1, 2014 according to the Burton and Associates Study, revealed last night, which is projected through the next decade. We had these same figures a few years ago but now the commission is serious on taxes.

It is just usual govt. sleight of hand to lower electric rates then raise water and sewer to cover the short fall. Better to be honest and say the one third who do pay tax will have to pay more to support the two thirds. Now the 20/20 plan that is a different story. Being a person who would pay a hefty tax I was still willing to pay, not now. Comm. McVoy represents a district which would greatly benefit from the plan and not have to pay for the improvements. Yet, he voted against it. Why would I want to give something to someone who resents the gesture. You yourself Lynn are looking foolish insinuating sea level rising is a reason not to do the 20/20 plan. Anyway works out for me to support your misguided platform as I have good streets, curbs and sidewalks.

First of all, you totally TWISTED what i wrote. I NEVER said not to vote for the bond because of salt water intrusion.

Next, everyone eventually will be paying for this as property values increase. Didn't you read my blog on inflation? Don't you get it???????????

Actually, I could care less how you vote. That is up to you. Most Democrats want to sock it to those with the money. Are you a Democrat?

I remember my neighbors watering their lawns 7 days a week during the one-day watering restrictions. I wanted to report them but was afraid of retaliation. It seems like my neighbors all hate each other any way.

I guess you can't tell people to find alternatives to sod.

Ha! I remember the comments "I'm not going to lose my lawn over some silly restrictions". Guess which (whose) neighborhood this was in??

Flamingo Park is beautiful because they are have unique landscaping and are not obsessed with lawns.

Thanks for the info, Lynn.

Anonymous at 10:27. How did you become so arrogant? Even John Szerdi recognizes sea level rising and global warming. Do you want to be an azz with him too? Voting on a bond and tying up your property for over 30 years is more than a "gesture." Our wells are now being dug west of I-95 to help mitigate saltwater intrusion. Is that ok with you or just another dumb gesture? The only person looking foolish here is you but you're too obtuse to understand that.

Incidentally your comments @10:47 have nothing to do with what I wrote. Best to not nip while commenting. But you do use some big boy words. Wonder if you understand any of them.
