Steve Spurrier Retiring

Comment Up

When you saw him as a teen, he was special and you knew he was destined for great things. I saw him play his senior year at Science Hill High School in Tennessee.

Just a kid, he was known as a sensation then and he was a letterman in three sports. He also excelled in baseball and was the starring pitcher that led his team to the state championships two consecutive years.

High school football was attended by mobs of people back then, unlike attendance today. There was loyalty to school and Friday night football was a tradition that you wouldn't miss for the world... cheerleaders, majorettes and great half-time shows. I drove from Bristol to see him quarterback and he was the best I had ever seen then or now. He went on to the University of Florida and was a Heisman Trophy winner. We all know about the rest of his impressive career.

Spurrier was the best ever. I remember him at Florida. He will go down in history as one of the top players and coaches if not the top coach of all time.
